He tells her that he may not make it home, urges her to live fully if he does not return, and declares, “I truly love you, Lena Derriecott.” The letter gives Lena a long-awaited answer about Abram—and a reason not to let grief keep her from living.
Who wrote the bloody letter?
Abram David wrote it to Lena. The film reveals the letter after Lena has spent much of the story grieving him and wondering whether the letters he promised to send are lost somewhere in the undelivered mail.
What does Abram’s letter say?
In the film transcript, Abram says he fears he may not make it home. If he does not return, he wants Lena to live her life. He asks her to live and laugh enough for both of them, then writes, “I truly love you, Lena Derriecott.” Lena answers, “I love you too, Abram David.”
That is the dialogue as recorded in a third-party transcript of the movie—not an authenticated wartime letter. Read the film transcript.

What the letter means for Lena and the ending
The revelation resolves two painful uncertainties for Lena: Abram did write to her, and he knew he might not survive. His message does not ask her to keep waiting or remain bound to a promise. Instead, it gives her permission to carry on with her life. Her reply makes the scene a final exchange of love, even though Abram is not there to hear it.
The scene also makes the battalion’s mail mission personal. The 6888th is sorting messages that connect people separated by war—letters that can bring news, reassurance, or grief to someone waiting at home.

What Tyler Perry said about the letter
Director Tyler Perry described the scene as a moment when Abram needed to tell someone both “I love you” and “I made it.” He explained that the letter mattered because Abram had held it close to his chest. Perry’s comments describe the emotional idea behind the scene; they are not the letter’s verbatim wording. Read the Directors Guild of America Q&A.

The 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion was a real World War II unit, and clearing military mail is the historical foundation of the film. Netflix describes a backlog of about 17 million pieces of mail; Tyler Perry’s official film page describes the assignment as clearing a three-year backlog. These are the sources’ separate descriptions, not interchangeable measurements of the same quantity. Netflix’s account of the battalion and Tyler Perry’s official film page provide that context.

Lena Derriecott King was a real veteran, but the sources cited here do not establish Abram David or this letter as historical people or an archival document. The romance and letter should therefore be understood as part of the film’s dramatized story, not as verified wartime history. TIME also distinguishes the real unit and Lena from the film’s account. Read TIME’s historical context.
The official film page credits Kevin Hymel and Tyler Perry as writers. That credit identifies the film’s writers; it does not establish the letter as a historical document.
