Ian Ousley, who plays Sokka in Netflix’s live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender, acknowledged that the adaptation changed the character’s explicitly sexist element—but argued that Sokka still has flaws, a recognizable relationship with Katara, and room to grow. Showrunner Albert Kim later said those attitudes remained in the series in subtler, more grounded forms.
What changed about Sokka?
The debate began before Netflix’s eight-part live-action adaptation premiered in February 2024. In an Entertainment Weekly interview, cast members Ian Ousley and Kiawentiio discussed changes to Sokka. Kiawentiio said the series took out the element of how sexist Sokka was, and Ousley agreed that some material had been redirected because it could play differently in live action. The remarks drew backlash from viewers who considered that flaw important to Sokka’s original character arc, according to The Independent’s February 22, 2024 report.
The comparison is between the Nickelodeon cartoon, which ran from 2005 to 2008, and Netflix’s live-action version. In the story, siblings Sokka and Katara discover Aang, a young airbender who may be the Avatar, as the Associated Press summarized in its February 19, 2024 series coverage.
What did Ian Ousley say in defense of the change?
In a GamesRadar+ interview reported by The Independent on February 22, Ousley pushed back on the idea that the adaptation intended to discard what fans valued in the cartoon: “The animated show really is the heart and soul of what our live-action show is. We were not trying to take out anything.” He did not mean that the sexist element was unchanged. Ousley explicitly acknowledged that it had been changed, then described a different expression of Sokka’s attitude toward Katara: “I’m the leader and you’re the follower” was the dynamic he said remained.

Ousley also argued that Sokka’s development survived the adjustment: “He’s still the Sokka we know and love from the cartoon. I don’t even think fans would notice some of those things, honestly, [when] watching our show… He definitely still has his arcs and his lessons in the show.” That was the actor’s view of the adaptation, not evidence that all viewers would interpret the change the same way.
How did showrunner Albert Kim explain Sokka’s portrayal?
In a separate TV Guide interview published on February 22, 2024, showrunner Albert Kim said the cast’s earlier comments were being considered without the episodes’ context. “That was a comment that was, if not taken out of context, it was taken without the context of the episodes in front of you,” he said. Kim described the adaptation’s approach as adding subtlety and making Sokka’s attitudes feel more grounded in a live-action setting: “What we tried to do in the course of making a live-action show was add a little subtlety, making it feel more like a real-world situation.”

Kim pointed to Sokka’s way of speaking to Katara in the first episode and to gender restrictions at the Northern Water Tribe as examples of older attitudes still present in the story. His explanation differs in emphasis from Ousley’s: Ousley acknowledged a changed sexist element and described a modified leader-and-follower dynamic; Kim argued that the episodes show those attitudes in subtler form. Kim also said Sokka is not presented as fully formed from the start: “There’s nothing in it that suggests that he’s a perfectly whole character at the start of the journey and he has nowhere to go.” His comments are reported in TV Guide’s interview.

Ousley said it did not: he maintained that Sokka still has arcs and lessons, even though the adaptation changed how one flaw is expressed. Kim likewise described Sokka as a character who still has room to develop. These are the actor’s and showrunner’s accounts of the adaptation; the available coverage does not establish a representative measure of audience opinion or show that every viewer agreed with them.

In a later, broader interview with Complex, published March 25, 2024, Ousley discussed other adaptation decisions, including advocating to keep Sokka’s Kyoshi armor and the cast’s aim of giving the original series a faithful adaptation. That interview provides additional context about his approach to adaptation choices, but his specific defense of the sexism change came in the earlier GamesRadar+ interview reported by The Independent.
