Parasyte: The Grey is based on Hitoshi Iwaaki’s manga Parasyte (also known as Kiseiju), not on the anime. The Netflix series tells a new story in the manga’s universe, set in South Korea with different central characters.
Is it an anime adaptation or a manga adaptation?
Its named source is Iwaaki’s manga, published by Kodansha. Netflix identifies the manga as the series’ “Original Work”; it does not identify the anime as its source. That makes The Grey a manga-based series, but not a direct retelling of the manga’s main plot.

Netflix describes the show as expanding the original manga’s universe with a new story and setting. Director Yeon Sang-ho put the distinction this way: “Rather than fashioning it as a simple Korean remake, I started out with the question: ‘What if it happened in Korea?’ and developed the story from there.” (The Korea Times, April 10, 2024.)

In the manga, Migi takes over Shinichi’s right hand. Su-in and Heidi have a different pairing and story, so viewers do not need to know Shinichi’s plot to follow The Grey.

Does it connect to the anime?
The anime adapts Iwaaki’s manga, but Netflix presents The Grey as an expansion of the manga’s universe, not as an adaptation of the anime. The useful distinction is the underlying source: the series draws on the manga’s premise and world while creating a separate story. Netflix Tudum likewise describes it as an original story in the manga’s universe (Netflix Tudum).

What to read if you want the source story
Start with volume 1 of Iwaaki’s Parasyte manga. It is the source work, but it is not a print version of The Grey’s Su-in-and-Heidi storyline: the manga follows Shinichi and Migi. Netflix’s announcement identifies Iwaaki’s manga as the original work (Netflix).
