Arcane is part of League of Legends’ shared Runeterra canon. The qualification is that Riot Games is aligning older lore gradually, so some existing character stories do not yet fit neatly with the series.
Why Arcane counts as canon
Riot Games announced on October 12, 2023, that “all new storytelling is part of one shared canon.” That policy places new Runeterra stories in a common continuity rather than treating them as separate versions by default. Riot’s Dev Update establishes the policy, though it does not name Arcane in that sentence.
A League Universe lore reference subsequently lists Arcane as confirmed canon to the primary Runeterra universe following the 2023 update. That explicit classification is secondary-source reporting, not a direct Riot quotation. The reference’s canon page corroborates the conclusion alongside Riot’s broader policy.
Official franchise descriptions point in the same direction. Netflix describes Arcane as the origin story of League champions Vi and Jinx, and quotes co-creator Christian Linke saying it is “the first of many stories that we want to tell in Runeterra.” That supports the series’ place in Riot’s wider setting, although Linke’s remark is not itself a formal canon-policy statement. Netflix’s Arcane Season 2 overview provides that description.

Why some older League lore may not match
Canon status does not mean every previously published biography or story already lines up perfectly with Arcane. Riot acknowledged inconsistencies in existing lore, citing Hextech and Yorick’s involvement in Sentinels of Light as examples. It said bringing the material together would take time and that it would weave inconsistent threads together as it revisited parts of the universe, rather than retconning every champion or story at once.
So when Arcane differs from an older account of a character or event, that mismatch is best understood as part of an ongoing continuity alignment—not proof that the series is outside the shared canon. Riot has described gradual integration, not a promise to rewrite every older biography.

Do Arcane events in the games count as story canon?
Not automatically. Riot has celebrated Arcane across League of Legends, Teamfight Tactics, Wild Rift, Legends of Runeterra, and other games with content such as skins, game modes, and promotional activations. Those appearances show the franchise’s reach, but a playable match, cosmetic, or special mode is not by itself evidence that the depicted event happened in Arcane’s narrative continuity. Riot’s game announcements describe these activations as game content.
The useful distinction is between the show’s place in shared Runeterra storytelling and the many ways games celebrate it. Arcane belongs to the canon; an individual gameplay scenario or crossover depiction needs its own narrative context before it can be treated as a literal story event.
