Landman’s daughter storyline centers on Ainsley Norris, teenage daughter of oil-company executive Tommy Norris, played by Michelle Randolph. Criticism has focused on two distinct issues: how the show writes Ainsley and how it presents a character the series identifies as 17. Those objections are documented in reviews and interviews, but the available sources do not establish that they represent most viewers.
Who is Landman’s daughter, and what is her storyline?
Ainsley Norris is Tommy Norris’s daughter in Landman, the modern West Texas oil-boom drama co-created by Taylor Sheridan and Christian Wallace and based on the Boomtown podcast. Her family story runs alongside the show’s oil-business plot. In Season 2, Ainsley begins college, and her strained relationship with her roommate Paigyn becomes a prominent part of that thread.

The question behind the backlash is not simply whether Ainsley is likable. It is whether the show’s blunt, comic characterization works—and whether its sexualized dialogue and framing are appropriate for a character identified as 17.
What are critics objecting to?
The writing and characterization
In a November 19, 2025 review, Forbes’ Paul Tassi criticized Ainsley’s college-admissions interview as a portrayal of profound naivety. TV Insider’s coverage of the Season 2 premiere, published November 16, described the interview as blunt and comedic. These are different readings of the same kind of scene: the humor some viewers may see as deliberate can also come across as making Ainsley seem shallow or clueless.
#1 Best Overall
Tassi’s criticism extends beyond Ainsley. He argues that the Norris women’s stories feel disconnected from the corporate and oil drama and that the female characters are stereotyped. That is one reviewer’s assessment, not evidence of a consensus among Landman viewers.
The sexualized presentation of a teenage character
The Forbes review also objects to the sexual framing of Ainsley, whom the show identifies as 17. That concern is separate from whether her dialogue is funny or believable: a viewer can accept that Ainsley is meant to be provocative and still object to how the series presents a teenager. The criticism should be understood as a response to the show’s creative choices, not as proof of how all viewers feel.

What has Michelle Randolph said about the criticism?
Randolph has described Ainsley as a young person still growing, and has said that the audience sees only part of her. In comments quoted by Us Weekly from earlier interviews, she said, “She’s 17 and she’s growing. I think she gets it more than the audience gets to see.” Randolph also characterized Ainsley this way: “I like to say she’s not dumb, she just has limited life experience, and we’re seeing her in her most formative years.”
That is the actor’s interpretation of the character, not a resolution of the criticism. It helps explain how Randolph approaches Ainsley, but viewers may still find the scenes’ writing or sexualized framing unconvincing.

Did Taylor Sheridan intend to provoke viewers?
In a June 29, 2026 TV Insider report about his Bill Simmons Podcast interview, Sheridan was quoted discussing the delayed resolution of Ainsley’s conflict with Paigyn, her nonbinary roommate. He said he wanted critics to stay frustrated and continue watching: “No, for exactly the reason you’re asking. I want to piss you off a little, and then, how dare I? and then you watch the next week and go, ‘Oh you got me,’”
That comment offers a specific explanation for the pacing of the roommate arc: Sheridan says the delay was intentional. It does not show that every disputed Ainsley scene—or the entire daughter storyline—was designed as provocation.

Is the backlash a consensus among Landman viewers?
The coverage documents pointed criticism, especially the Forbes review, and Randolph has acknowledged that the reaction to Ainsley is hard to ignore. But the cited sources do not provide a representative survey, audience-wide measurement, or percentage showing how many viewers share those objections. “Backlash” therefore describes a visible critical response, not a demonstrated majority view.
