The You You Are is a fictional book from the world of Severance, but Apple Books has real digital ebook and audiobook listings for an excerpt. Both editions are described as containing the first eight chapters and an apology letter. Whether the excerpt is free, and whether either edition is available, depends on the storefront serving your region.
Is The You You Are a real book?
It is a fictional book attributed to Dr. Ricken Lazlo Hale, PhD, a character in Severance. Apple Books describes its ebook as drawn from the series’ universe, and lists Apple Inc. as publisher and seller. That makes the listing a real digital release of an in-universe excerpt, not evidence that Ricken or the book exists outside the show.
Apple TV’s official series listing and episode guide describe Severance as a story about office workers whose memories have been surgically divided between their work and personal lives. The guide names Season 1, Episode 4 “The You You Are,” and identifies Michael Chernus as Ricken.
What does the excerpt include?
The Apple Books ebook listing says the edition features the inaugural eight chapters and an author apology letter. It is an English-language edition, released January 31, 2025, and listed at 39 pages. The separate audiobook listing describes the same contents: eight chapters and an apology letter.

Choose the ebook if you prefer to read on a screen, or the audiobook if listening suits you better. The listings describe the same chapter count and letter; they do not establish that one edition contains additional material.
Is it free, and where can you get it?
The title’s “free excerpt” framing should not be taken as a guarantee of a universal price. The Apple Books pages provide edition details, but do not establish identical pricing or availability in every country. Check the ebook or audiobook listing in your own Apple Books storefront for current access and price.
