How does the film connect to Kurosawa and Ed McBain?
The source lineage starts with Ed McBain’s novel King’s Ransom, which the AP identifies as the basis for Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 film High and Low. Lee’s film is a contemporary reinterpretation rather than a period-set account: Apple places its story in modern New York and centers it on a music mogul caught in a ransom crisis.
