According to One Chicago Center’s January 22, 2025 recap, Sully has terminal cancer and is in the hospital after suffering a spleen injury in prison. As his injuries heal, Ripley learns Sully may be sent back to jail. Ripley tries to buy him more time at Med by asking Lenox to order additional scans.
Lenox eventually agrees to the scans. But after Ripley hears that they will be done, Lynn tells him Sully has died from a blood clot while she was out of the room, the recap reports. Sully had been glad to spend time with his newborn son and girlfriend.

How does Sully’s death connect to Ripley’s spiral?
Ripley’s effort to keep Sully at Med makes the death especially painful: he has tried to secure more time for a patient facing a return to prison, only to learn Sully died just as further scans were being arranged. One Chicago Center’s recap anticipated that the loss would hit Ripley hard.
That sequence supports reading Sully’s death as emotional context for Ripley’s later choices, not as a confirmed single cause. Peacock’s official Season 10 listing for Episode 13, “Take a Look in the Mirror,” says Ripley’s “self-destructive behavior continues to escalate.” The listing establishes the later escalation, but does not attribute it exclusively to Sully’s death.

What else happens in the episode?
The other stories in “Broken Hearts” deepen the episode’s losses and strained relationships. One Chicago Center’s recap reports that the conjoined twins undergo separation surgery, but Powell suffers a massive stroke after coming off bypass and is placed on life support. Maggie and Loren end their relationship. Hannah declines her sister Lizzie’s request for a PCOS diagnosis connected to another IVF round, while offering support in another way.
