That was Carnes’s personal reaction—not a legal finding that Siwa infringed copyright. Online criticism of the cover’s production added a separate strand to the debate.
What Kim Carnes said about the cover
After Siwa released her version in July 2025, Carnes’s first public social post appeared to address it, but was later deleted. In a fuller statement to TMZ, published July 14, 2025, Carnes said she had watched her original performance placed beside and layered over Siwa’s version. She said, “The phrasing, the tone, even the little inflections—it all felt a bit too close.”
Carnes described the resemblance as personal because a singer’s voice is closely tied to their identity: “These days, our voice is one of the few things we truly own.” Her statement explains how she felt about the performance; it does not establish that Siwa copied protected material or that any court or regulator reached a conclusion.
Carnes also opposed the online abuse
Carnes rejected personal attacks aimed at either performer, saying, “I strongly reject the kind of hate and personal attacks I’ve seen online—whether directed at me, JoJo Siwa, or anyone else.” She added that she supports women artists lifting one another up and noted that the song has been covered many times. Her comments were not simply an attack on Siwa: they combined a direct expression of discomfort with a call to keep criticism from becoming harassment.

Who wrote “Bette Davis Eyes”?
Jackie DeShannon and Donna Weiss wrote “Bette Davis Eyes.” Carnes did not write the song; her 1981 recording became its best-known hit, and her vocal interpretation is the performance Siwa’s cover was compared with. NME’s coverage likewise identifies Carnes’s familiar recording as a cover of the song by Weiss and DeShannon.
Carnes has said Weiss brought the song to her in 1980 and that she developed a version shaped around her own voice. She recalled working with musicians including Bill Cuomo, who came up with the recognizable synthesizer lick. Carnes also said the track was recorded live in one take, without overdubs or manipulation; that is her account as reported by TMZ.

This songwriting history matters: discussion of Siwa’s resemblance to Carnes concerns Carnes’s celebrated recording and vocal interpretation, not authorship of the underlying song. The reporting establishes neither that Carnes owns the composition nor that Siwa “stole” it.
Why reactions to Siwa’s version differ
Carnes’s concern centered on vocal resemblance: phrasing, tone and small inflections. Separately, PinkNews reported criticism of Siwa’s vocals and production, including comments about autotune and commercialized pop production. Those are critics’ judgments, not objective technical findings, and they are not the same complaint Carnes made.

The comparison is also between recordings made in different contexts: Carnes’s 1981 hit and Siwa’s 2025 cover. Listeners may disagree about which interpretation they prefer or how much the newer recording resembles the older one. The factual points are narrower: Carnes said it felt too close to her performance, while other critics focused on the production and vocals.

The available reporting documents Carnes’s subjective response and public criticism of Siwa’s cover. It does not report a formal legal finding of infringement. A resemblance claim in a public statement should not be treated as proof of a legal violation, and artistic disagreement is not itself a court judgment.
