Batman was reportedly called “The Dark Knight” in a 1940 comic, decades before Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns. The distinction is important: Bill Finger is credited with the early comic narration, while Miller’s 1986 series helped make the name stick.
When was Batman first called the Dark Knight?
The earliest Batman use identified in the available account appears in Batman No. 1, published in 1940. Heritage Auctions reports that the words appear in the final panel on page 11, in narration attributed to Batman co-creator Bill Finger: “The shock of cold water quickly revives The Dark Knight.” Heritage Auctions’ account is the source for the panel wording and attribution; the issue itself is not independently examined here.

This is a reported early use of the epithet for Batman, not proof that the phrase “dark knight” originated in that comic or that it was the first use anywhere in writing or media.
Who came up with Batman’s “Dark Knight” nickname?
For the 1940 comic appearance, Heritage credits Bill Finger’s narration. That makes Finger the credited source for this early Batman use in the cited account. It does not establish who first coined the phrase in a broader historical sense.

Did Frank Miller invent the name?
No. The reported 1940 use predates Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns by 46 years. Miller’s four-issue series, published by DC in 1986 and illustrated with inks by Klaus Janson, helped make “The Dark Knight” a defining, widely recognized Batman epithet. Heritage says the series made the nickname stick; DC’s retrospective confirms the series’ 1986 publication and prominence.

How the nickname fits Batman’s early history
The character’s beginnings and the nickname’s history are separate milestones. DC dates Batman’s first appearance to Detective Comics #27 in 1939. Readers learned his backstory later that year in Detective Comics #33: the origin sequence depicts the murder of Bruce Wayne’s parents, his vow, his training, and his decision to become a bat-themed crimefighter. Neither date is the reported source of the “Dark Knight” wording. DC’s Batman chronology covers these early appearances.
Rank #2
Batman’s 1989 film broadened the character’s recognition with moviegoers. DC’s retrospective says Tim Burton’s Batman introduced many filmgoers to why the character had long been called the Dark Knight; that is a qualitative description, not a measured audience figure.

- Established in the cited account: Heritage Auctions reports the phrase in Batman No. 1 (1940), identifies its location as the last panel on page 11, and attributes the narration to Bill Finger.
- Established about later prominence: DC dates The Dark Knight Returns to 1986, and Heritage describes it as helping the nickname stick.
- Not established: These sources do not identify the phrase’s first use outside Batman comics, prove who coined “dark knight” generally, or quantify how much public usage changed.
DC’s current Batman character profile uses “He is vengeance. He is the night. He is Batman.” as a tagline, reflecting the established association rather than explaining its historical origin.
