Varun Dhawan is the liveliest part of Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, a Hindi wedding rom-com whose familiar setup and uneven pacing keep it from matching his energy. That is Nandini Ramnath’s verdict in Scroll.in’s review; other critics also praise Dhawan’s comic timing, while disagreeing about whether the film’s spectacle and songs make for an entertaining whole.
What is Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari about?
Written and directed by Shashank Khaitan, Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari is a Hindi romantic comedy that opened in theaters on October 2, 2025. Varun Dhawan plays Sunny Sanskari and Janhvi Kapoor plays Tulsi Kumari. Their former partners, Ananya and Vikram, are played by Sanya Malhotra and Rohit Saraf.
After Ananya and Vikram leave Sunny and Tulsi and plan to marry, the two jilted exes team up. They pose as a couple and try to disrupt the wedding; their scheme, predictably, gives way to a romance of its own. The film’s Rotten Tomatoes listing and BookMyShow listing provide its synopsis and release details.
Why Varun Dhawan stands out
For Ramnath, Dhawan’s performance is the film’s most dependable source of fun. She writes, “Varun Dhawan has the best lines, the best situations, the best dance moves, the best everything.” Her sharper summary is that “the film is a Sunny Sanskari show.” These are judgments about the film’s balance, not a claim that the other performers have nothing to offer.

Dhaval Roy, reviewing for The Times of India, also praises Dhawan’s comic timing, calling it “impeccable.” The reviews converge on the actor’s ability to make the comedy move, even as they diverge on how well the story around him works.
How the story and pacing fare
The central wedding-and-exes premise is familiar territory for a romantic comedy. The question is whether the film develops that setup into convincing feeling and character dynamics. Shubhra Gupta’s The Indian Express review gives it 2/5, arguing that the well-worn wedding-film template and spectacle-heavy writing crowd out the screenplay. She writes: “In too many places, the spectacle is allowed to overpower the screenplay, which is too busy whipping up hit-film-referencing dialogues and situations to bother about creating real feeling.”

- Factory sealed DVD
Ramnath finds that the film seems to run short of ideas by the interval. Roy is more measured, rating it 3/5, but also notes a pacing dip after the interval and songs that interrupt the rhythm. Taken together, the reviews suggest a film that can deliver lively stretches without sustaining the same momentum or emotional development throughout.
Do the songs and spectacle help?
Dance is part of the movie’s appeal, particularly when Dhawan is at the center of it. But musical interruptions are not a plus for every reviewer: Roy says the songs break the story’s rhythm. Gupta’s criticism points to a related trade-off. The scale and visual showmanship can provide the expected wedding-film spectacle, but in her view they too often take precedence over the screenplay and feeling.

Is Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari worth watching?
It is most appealing if Dhawan’s comic performance, dance numbers and an uncomplicated wedding-romance setup are what you want. Expect less if you are looking for a novel premise, tightly controlled pacing or a consistently persuasive romantic story. The critical split reflects that difference: even reviewers who praise the lead performance raise questions about the writing, rhythm or the way spectacle is used.
