- Michelle Yeoh as Eileen “Mama” Sun: Eileen is the shrewd, strategic matriarch. After leaving Taipei with Bruce, she builds a life in Los Angeles while keeping her family close and navigating danger with resolve and warmth.
- Justin Chien as Charles Sun: Eileen’s older son was raised in the family’s criminal business. Known among the triads as “Chairleg,” Charles is a feared protector whose journey to Los Angeles takes him beyond the world he knows.
- Sam Song Li as Bruce Sun: Eileen’s younger son grew up in Southern California with little memory of Taipei and little understanding of his family’s past. In Netflix Tudum’s character breakdown, Li describes Bruce as wanting to pursue improv while studying to become a doctor.
Yeoh has described the character’s contrasting sides to Tudum: “She can be goofy, and I love that. She’s very smart.” Chien characterizes Charles as a “tortured, broken soul” who longs for peace and happiness, while Li says Bruce’s heart is “always in the right place” as he is drawn into a complicated world. These are the actors’ own descriptions, not separate plot summaries.
Who else stars in The Brothers Sun?
Friends and allies in Los Angeles
- Highdee Kuan as Alexis Kong: An ambitious Los Angeles assistant district attorney with a strong sense of justice.
- Joon Lee as TK Lee: Bruce’s childhood friend, an aspiring gangster and devoted gamer whose ambitions outpace his experience.
- Jenny Yang as Xing: A humorless ally helping protect the Suns. Netflix’s 2022 cast announcement described Yang’s role as recurring.
- Madison Hu as Grace Hwang: Bruce’s classmate, who shares his interest in comedy. Netflix’s 2022 announcement also listed Hu in a recurring role.
Rivals and the Sun family’s circle
- Alice Hewkin as June Song and May Song: Hewkin plays twin sisters with contrasting lives: June is a tattoo artist, while May leads the Los Angeles triad known as the White Cranes.
- Jon Xue Zhang as Blood Boots: A lethal Sun family enforcer whose cheerful manner sits at odds with his fearsome reputation.
- Johnny Kou as Big Sun: Eileen’s husband and the Taiwanese triad leader. His shooting sets Charles’s trip to Los Angeles in motion.
- Rodney To as Mark: To was included in Netflix’s original recurring-cast announcement; that announcement does not provide a detailed character description.
What is the series about?
Netflix describes the story as a Taiwanese family divided between Taipei and Los Angeles. After a mysterious assassin targets the triad leader, Charles travels to Los Angeles to protect Eileen and Bruce. Their reunion brings family tensions into the open as they face threats from rival groups. The show’s crime-family setup is fictional drama, not reporting about Taiwanese communities or organized crime.

Showrunner and co-creator Brad Falchuk framed the series around “what it means to be a son, what it means to be a brother, and also what it means to try and keep a family together,” as quoted by Netflix Tudum.
