Stranger Things ends where its story began: in the Wheeler basement, with the friends finishing a Dungeons & Dragons campaign. As Holly and her friends arrive to start their own game, the scene signals that the original group is leaving childhood behind. That explanation comes from co-creator Matt Duffer—not Shawn Levy, whose documented comment about the final season addresses its emotional center, not this specific ending.
What happens in the final scene?
Mike, Will, Dustin, Lucas and Max finish one last D&D campaign in the Wheeler basement. Then Holly and her friends come down to begin their own. The closing scene returns the series to the game and setting that framed its beginning, but the younger players’ arrival turns that callback into a handoff.
Matt Duffer explained the choice to Netflix Tudum: “It’s their time to leave it behind and pass the torch to the next group of kids.” The older friends are not simply ending a game; they are moving on from the childhood world the game represents. Netflix Tudum’s finale interview gives the creators’ account of the scene and their choices for the characters.
Why does the ending return to the beginning?
The series opens with the friends playing D&D, and its finale brings them back to the Wheeler basement to complete a final campaign. That makes the game a structural bookend: the story revisits its starting image, while the younger group’s arrival shows that the characters’ lives are changing. The final moment holds both ideas at once—an echo of the beginning and a departure from it.

The Duffers also returned to the show’s early visual approach for the closing scene. Ross Duffer told Tudum: “That was the first thing we ever shot, and it felt appropriate that this would be the last thing we ever shot.” He said they tried to mimic the camera approach from Season 1.
What happens to the characters after the campaign?
The finale’s coda gives the friends different next steps rather than sending them all toward one shared future. Steve stays in Hawkins to teach and coach; Nancy pursues a journalism job in Boston; Jonathan attends NYU; and Hopper and Joyce have an opportunity to begin a new chapter. These choices extend the characters’ established paths while showing that growing up means separating as well as remembering where they began.

What did Shawn Levy say about the finale?
Netflix identifies Shawn Levy as an executive producer on Stranger Things. In a Tudum feature about the season’s craft, Levy said: “The action is next level, the visual effects are next level, but I’m also happy to say that the emotional center remains the same.” His comment describes the final season’s balance of spectacle and character emotion; it is not the explanation for the final D&D scene. Read Netflix Tudum’s feature with Levy.
The specific reason for ending with the campaign and the younger players is attributed to Matt Duffer in Netflix’s finale interview. Netflix’s series page lists Levy as an executive producer and identifies Season 5 as the final season, but does not attribute this particular creative rationale to him.
