The result is emotionally engaging and convincing on the court, even if the film gives some of its supporting characters less room than its central players.
What is Rez Ball about?
The Chuska Warriors, a fictional high school basketball team in New Mexico, lose their star player and must regroup if they are to keep pursuing a state championship. That setup supplies the familiar engine of a sports drama: a team in trouble, pressure to come together, and games that test whether its players can do so.

Directed and co-written by Sydney Freeland and co-written by Sterlin Harjo, the film was released by Netflix on September 27, 2024. LeBron James is among its producers. Netflix’s official film page introduces the team’s championship push.
Is Rez Ball based on a true story or on Canyon Dreams?
The film is fiction, not a direct dramatization of a particular team’s season. It draws on the broader culture of Native American high school basketball and on Michael Powell’s nonfiction book Canyon Dreams: A Basketball Season on the Navajo Nation. Powell’s book follows the Chinle High School Wildcats; the movie’s Chuska Warriors and their story are distinct. TIME’s account of the real stories behind the film explains that distinction and the book’s role as inspiration.

That difference matters to the film’s appeal. Rez Ball is not asking viewers to treat its plot as a record of real events. Its aim is to place a fictional team inside a recognizable cultural and community context. The book is a worthwhile next read for viewers interested in the real-world basketball reporting that informed the movie, but it tells a different team’s story.
Does the familiar sports-movie formula work?
Mostly, yes. The broad turns are recognizable, so suspense comes less from guessing whether the Warriors will face setbacks than from watching how the players respond to them. In her Associated Press review, Jocelyn Noveck describes the sports-movie beats as predictable but emotionally affecting, and praises the ending and basketball sequences. That is one critic’s assessment, rather than evidence of universal consensus.
The familiar structure also gives the movie an accessible shape. Its more distinctive strength is the way the team’s pursuit of a title sits alongside relationships and community life beyond the court. The championship goal provides momentum; the setting gives that momentum a human context beyond the scoreboard.
How convincing are the basketball and community details?
The game scenes have physical credibility, helping the film’s pressure feel earned rather than staged. Netflix says performers were chosen in part for their basketball ability. In a casting feature, the company reports 5,000 submissions and says Freeland noted that 32 actors auditioned for 10 roles. The casting process included basketball tests, including shooting and drills. Those details help explain the on-court confidence; they do not make one movie a stand-in for every Native community.
Production choices add context as well. Netflix reports that the film was shot on Navajo Nation and had a predominantly Native cast and crew, with Navajo filmmaker Freeland directing and co-writing. Its report on community screenings describes the production and its local connections. The setting is not simply scenery for a conventional sports plot: it shapes the film’s sense of belonging and the relationships around the team.

The strongest limitation is the imbalance between the central team story and some of the off-court characters. Noveck’s AP review says several supporting characters receive cursory treatment. That shortfall matters because the film’s cultural and community specificity is one of its most promising dimensions: more time with those relationships could have made the emotional world feel even fuller.
The movie’s hopeful direction also has to coexist with serious material. It does not turn every difficulty into a neat lesson, but its conventional sports-drama shape can make some of the harder experiences feel compressed beside the forward drive toward the championship. The ending lands emotionally for Noveck; viewers looking for a more expansive account of every character’s life may find the film narrower than its setting invites.
Is Rez Ball appropriate for teens?
The Associated Press lists the film as PG-13 for thematic elements including suicide, teen drug and alcohol use, language, and crude references. It reports a runtime of 111 minutes; Netflix rounds that to 1 hour 53 minutes. Families deciding whether to watch with younger teens should consider those themes, not just the basketball focus.
