The finale makes its treasure chase matter by forcing JJ to choose between the Blue Crown and Kiara. He gives up the crown to save her, but Chandler Groff stabs him anyway. It is a shocking, painful goodbye—and a clear launch point for the Pogues’ revenge story. The key question is whether that emotional turn earns its place amid the season’s action and treasure-mystery momentum.
What happens in the Season 4 Part 2 ending?
JJ’s family history has been woven into the treasure plot since Part 1. Wes Genrette’s letter points him toward “Albatross”; Luke explains that the boat was connected to Larissa Genrette, JJ’s biological mother, and reveals that Chandler Groff is JJ’s biological father. That discovery makes the search for Blackbeard’s treasure personal: the mystery is also a route into the truth about JJ’s origins. Netflix’s ending explainer lays out the connection.
In Morocco, JJ has already handed the Blue Crown to Groff in exchange for Kiara. Groff has what he wanted, but still stabs JJ. The betrayal sharpens the finale’s central contrast: the crown represents the riches driving the chase, while JJ’s choice gives priority to the people he loves. Before surrendering it, he says, “I already have everything,” then adds, “I have everything I’ve ever wanted, things that you’ll never have.”
Does JJ’s death feel earned?
The choice fits the JJ the series has built: reckless, impulsive and repeatedly willing to put himself in danger for the Pogues. Actor Rudy Pankow described that outlook in a Netflix interview published November 8, 2024: “He lives his life to the utmost fullest, and I don’t think he regrets any part of it.” The finale’s last act turns that familiar loyalty into a final, irreversible decision.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That consistency helps the death land as more than a twist. JJ does not trade the crown because he has stopped caring about the adventure; he chooses Kiara over the prize at the moment when the treasure’s value is clearest. The emotional logic is strong, even if the abruptness leaves little time for the loss to settle before the story points toward what comes next.
Groff’s decision to stab JJ after getting the crown makes him a more personal threat to the group. It is a cruel escalation, and it gives the Pogues a direct reason to pursue him beyond the shifting promises of a treasure hunt. Whether the scene feels like a credible culmination or an intentionally shocking turn is a matter of how much weight a viewer gives the season’s groundwork; the betrayal itself is unmistakable.

How does the finale set up Season 5?
The immediate handoff is revenge. In the finale’s closing exchange, the Pogues ask what JJ would do; John B answers that JJ would get even, and Kiara says, “Revenge.” That ending makes grief an active story engine rather than a pause in the adventure.
The creators also framed the death as groundwork for the final season. Co-creator Josh Pate said, “It sets the stage for an epic fifth and final season. We’re planning a story of redemption, and a season that embodies the friendship that JJ had come to represent.” Co-creator Jonas Pate said, “At some point, this had to happen in order to justify P4L.” Pankow described the question left behind as: “His death really does set up the future of OBX with the question, what is worth it? And when someone that close to you is gone, how do you navigate that?” These comments explain the intended direction; they do not guarantee that every viewer will find the loss satisfying. A Teen Vogue interview published November 7, 2024 also discusses the finale’s revenge beat.

How does the review read now that Season 5 is out?
When Season 4 Part 2 premiered, the fifth season was still ahead. Netflix announced on November 4, 2024 that Season 5 would be the show’s final season, before Part 2 arrived on November 7. The renewal announcement records that timing.
That anticipation is now hindsight: Season 5 premiered August 20, 2026, and all ten episodes are available, according to Netflix’s Season 5 guide and the Netflix Media Center listing. Netflix’s official premise describes the Pogues mourning JJ in Morocco after losing the Blue Crown, facing Groff, Dalia, the Corsairs and the Kooks, and entering an uneasy alliance with Rafe as they seek revenge and a way forward. That confirms the finale’s setup without changing its original function: Season 4 ends by opening a story about grief, friendship and retaliation.
