The Pokémon Company International said it was not involved in a Department of Homeland Security video that used imagery and language associated with Pokémon, and that it had not granted permission to use its intellectual property. The statement did not announce a lawsuit or say what the company would do next.

What did The Pokémon Company International say?

In a statement provided to Kotaku on September 24, 2025, The Pokémon Company International said: “We are aware of a recent video posted by the Department of Homeland Security that includes imagery and language associated with our brand. Our company was not involved in the creation or distribution of this content, and permission was not granted for the use of our intellectual property.” Kotaku reported the statement; it was not presented as a company-hosted press release or attributed to a named spokesperson.

What was in the DHS video?

DHS published the post on X on September 22, 2025. Reports described it as combining Pokémon anime theme music and imagery with footage associated with immigration arrests, Pokémon-style wording, and mock trading-card graphics. The Los Angeles Times described the video and reported that it was still on the department’s X account on September 25, 2025. That was a report of its status on that date, not confirmation that it remains available now.

Did Pokémon give DHS permission?

No. The company’s reported statement says permission was not granted for use of its intellectual property. It also says the company was not involved in making or distributing the video.

Will Pokémon sue DHS?

The statement did not say whether the company planned legal action or any other next step. Former Pokémon chief legal officer Don McGowan separately told IGN that he did not expect the company to act, citing its preference to avoid publicity and his view of the circumstances facing some U.S.-based executives. Nintendo Life quoted McGowan’s comments. His remarks were a former executive’s personal prediction, not a company announcement or confirmed outcome.

Does the statement establish that the video was illegal?

No legal determination is established by the statement or the cited reporting. The company’s assertion that it did not grant permission is distinct from a court’s assessment of whether a particular use violates intellectual-property law. The available reporting does not establish a finding on infringement, fair use, or government liability.

What did DHS say about using popular media?

In a report published November 1, 2025, Nintendo Everything relayed a general DHS explanation, given in response to a journalist’s inquiry, that the department uses familiar popular media to reach audiences. That account did not describe a legal response to Pokémon or resolve the status of the video.
