Spoilers for Pachinko season 2, episode 8, “Chapter Sixteen.” Noa visits Sunja after learning that Hansu is his biological father, but he does not tell her what he has discovered. After confronting Hansu, he returns to his mother for a quiet goodbye before leaving his family and former life behind. The finale never has Noa explain his motive outright; the scene and creator Soo Hugh’s comments support the reading that he wants one last connection with Sunja without making her answer for the secret.

Noa confronts Hansu, then visits Sunja. He does not tell her that he knows the truth. Instead, he tells her that he loves and misses home, then leaves. Sunja does not initially understand that the visit is a final goodbye. When she realizes what it meant, she is frightened and heartbroken.
Why does Noa visit Sunja?
The visit allows Noa to express his love for Sunja without revealing what he has learned or asking her to explain the secret. It is an affectionate moment, but also a severance: Noa is preparing to abandon his family and former identity, while Sunja is left not knowing why he has gone.

That motive is an interpretation of the scene, not an explanation Noa gives in dialogue. Hugh has said the series deliberately made the mother-son goodbye gentler than the corresponding confrontation in the novel. She called the scene “the sweetest scene,” praising the performances by Minha Kim and Tae Joo.
Why does Noa confront Hansu first?
Hugh says Hansu became a much larger character in the series than he is in the book, and the show built a significant history between Hansu and Noa. One formative memory is young Noa seeing Hansu beat a foreman. Hugh connects that experience to Noa’s later violent response and describes the moment as raising a nature-versus-nurture question, without offering a simple answer.
That expanded relationship helps explain the show’s choice to have Noa confront Hansu first. In the novel, Noa confronts Sunja about the secret. In the series, he faces Hansu, then leaves Sunja with a tender goodbye instead of telling her that he knows.
What does “Ogawa Minato” mean for Noa’s identity?
Noa takes the name Ogawa Minato as he leaves. Hugh says the name belongs to a Japanese teacher Noa encountered earlier, whom Noa learned was Korean. In Hugh’s interpretation, choosing that name suggests Noa is struggling to hold both identities rather than simply rejecting his Korean identity. She cautions against treating the choice as straightforward: “I don’t think it’s that simple because he took a Japanese name from someone who is Korean.”

Sunja is not told why Noa leaves or that he has discovered Hansu’s paternity. Her grief therefore comes with uncertainty and fear about what may happen to him. Kim described Sunja as sensing something unusual at first, then becoming frightened once she realizes the visit was intentional and final: “But after the last episode, she’s frightened, and she’s afraid of all things that could happen.”
The tenderness of the goodbye does not erase the harm caused by the secret or the pain of Noa’s disappearance. It gives mother and son a brief moment of closeness while leaving Sunja without the truth that might explain his departure.
How the series ending differs from the novel
The key adaptation change is the order and nature of Noa’s confrontations. In Min Jin Lee’s novel, Noa confronts Sunja first about the secret. In the series, he confronts Hansu, then visits Sunja without revealing what he knows. Hugh has described the change as fitting the series’ expanded Hansu-Noa relationship and allowing the mother-son scene to remain gentle.
