Netflix’s trailer for The Thursday Murder Club introduces four retirement-community residents whose cold-case hobby becomes a murder investigation close to home. Helen Mirren plays Elizabeth, Pierce Brosnan plays Ron, and the film adapts Richard Osman’s 2020 novel of the same name.
What the trailer shows
The premise starts with four retirees meeting to investigate old, unsolved murders for fun. When an unexplained death occurs near their community, their armchair sleuthing turns into a live whodunit. The official Netflix Tudum page and Amblin film page present the trailer.
The setup establishes the club and its new case without giving away the culprit or the ending. The appeal is the contrast between a group accustomed to revisiting old crimes and a mystery unfolding around them now.
Who Pierce Brosnan and Helen Mirren play
Mirren plays Elizabeth and Brosnan plays Ron. They are two members of the quartet, alongside Ben Kingsley as Ibrahim and Celia Imrie as Joyce. Netflix’s cast and film details identify the roles.

The wider cast includes Naomi Ackie, Daniel Mays, Henry Lloyd-Hughes, Tom Ellis, Jonathan Pryce, David Tennant, Paul Freeman, Geoff Bell, Richard E. Grant and Ingrid Oliver.
How the film connects to Richard Osman’s novel
The film is based on Osman’s 2020 novel, with a screenplay adapted by Katy Brand and Suzanne Heathcote. Chris Columbus directed it. Columbus told Tudum: “There’s a wonderful mystery at its core, so mystery fans will be very happy.”
Readers who want the story in its original novel form can find the Netflix tie-in paperback listed by Penguin Random House. The publisher lists it as a 384-page edition, published August 12, 2025; its ISBN is 9780593513033. A film adaptation may differ from the book, so the paperback is best understood as the source novel rather than a guarantee of every screenplay detail.
