Spoiler-aware cast guide: Season 4’s central mystery begins with the shooting of Charles’s friend and stunt double, Sazz Pataki. Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez return as Charles-Haden Savage, Oliver Putnam and Mabel Mora. Around them, the season brings in West Tower residents and performers playing fictionalized versions of the trio in a movie about their podcast.
What is Season 4 about?
After Sazz Pataki is shot, Charles, Oliver and Mabel investigate whether Sazz or Charles was the intended target. The trail takes the trio from New York to Los Angeles, where a studio is preparing a film based on the Only Murders podcast, and then back to the Arconia to investigate residents of its West Tower. That story brings together familiar characters, new residents and Hollywood performers in the cast.
Disney’s season announcement gives the premise and names special guest stars. It is an overview, not a complete episode-by-episode cast or cameo index.

Who plays the trio in the movie within the story?
The season’s Hollywood storyline introduces performers cast to portray the podcast trio in a film. They are playing fictionalized versions of themselves, not replacing the actors who play Charles, Oliver and Mabel in the series.
| Performer | In-story film role | Series character portrayed |
|---|---|---|
| Eugene Levy | Fictionalized Eugene Levy | Charles-Haden Savage |
| Eva Longoria | Fictionalized Eva Longoria | Mabel Mora |
| Zach Galifianakis | Fictionalized Zach Galifianakis | Oliver Putnam |
That distinction is the key to the season’s meta-casting: Steve Martin, Selena Gomez and Martin Short remain the series’ Charles, Mabel and Oliver, while Levy, Longoria and Galifianakis are cast as those characters in the film within the story. Vogue’s Season 4 cast coverage identifies the three in-story film roles.

Which other guest stars have identified characters?
The cast listing identifies these additional Season 4 guest-star roles:
- Molly Shannon as Bev Melon.
- Richard Kind as Vince Fish.
- Kumail Nanjiani as Rudy Thurber.
Disney also names Melissa McCarthy among the season’s special guest stars. The cited sources do not establish her character’s name, so this guide does not assign one. Disney’s official announcements name performers, but do not supply a complete performer-to-character list for every guest.
Are these guest appearances cameos?
Disney describes its listed performers as “special guest stars.” A guest-star listing alone does not establish how long someone appears or which episodes they appear in, so it is more precise to call them guest stars or guest appearances than to label them all cameos. A cameo is best reserved for a brief appearance confirmed by episode-specific information; the available season roster does not provide that detail.
When did Season 4 premiere?
Disney+ UK announced a UK premiere date of August 27, 2024, in its May 15, 2024 release announcement. A later Disney announcement dated September 5, 2024 said the season was then streaming on Disney+ in that market. Those dated UK statements do not establish current availability in every country; check the Disney+ listing for your territory.
