What is Sunrise on the Reaping about?
The story is set 24 years before The Hunger Games and begins on the morning of the Fiftieth Hunger Games, the Second Quarter Quell. In the publisher’s spoiler-light synopsis, twice the usual number of tributes will be taken. In District 12, young Haymitch Abernathy is trying to get through the day and spend time with the girl he loves before his name is called.
Collins said the story was inspired by David Hume’s idea of implicit submission and “the easiness with which the many are governed by the few.” She also described a deeper exploration of propaganda and the power of those who control the narrative, connecting it to the question “Real or not real?” Her statement appeared in Scholastic’s announcement.

How many copies has the book sold?
These are publisher-reported sales figures, not independently audited totals. Scholastic reported that Sunrise on the Reaping sold more than 1.5 million World English copies in its first week across print, ebook, and audiobook formats in the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand; more than 1.2 million of those copies were in the United States. In a January 2026 announcement, Scholastic reported more than 4.4 million World English copies sold since publication, including more than 3.3 million in the United States. These figures describe the publisher’s reports at those dates, not a current lifetime total. The 2026 announcement also says more than 100 million copies of all five Hunger Games books were in print and digital worldwide, a separate franchise-wide figure reported by Scholastic in 2025.
When is the Sunrise on the Reaping movie coming out?
The film is a separate adaptation, not the novel’s publication. Lionsgate announced a North American theatrical release beginning November 20, 2026.
