Its title and trailer hint that Ethan Hunt may be nearing the end of his missions, but neither confirms that this is Tom Cruise’s last appearance—or that the wider franchise is ending. Cruise said in 2023 that he hoped to keep making the films into his 80s; at Cannes in 2025, he called this movie a culmination, not a last hurrah.
What is Mission: Impossible 8 called?
The eighth film is Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. Paramount Global Content lists it as the eighth installment and gives its premiere date as May 23, 2025. Paramount’s listing identifies the film and its cast.
The movie follows 2023’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning. Ethan Hunt’s new challenge is the Entity, an artificial intelligence. The film’s stakes are framed in the Cannes Festival synopsis with the line, “Our lives are the sum of our choices.” Cannes’ film page describes the story and the finality suggested by its title and trailer.
Does The Final Reckoning mean Ethan Hunt’s story is ending?
It suggests that possibility, but the title alone does not confirm it. Cannes described the title and trailer as suggesting that this could be Hunt’s final mission. That is an interpretation of the film’s presentation, not an announcement that the character or franchise will end.

- Hunt and the IMF pursue a dangerous AI called the Entity that's infiltrated global intelligence.
It helps to separate three claims: the title and marketing carry a final-sounding implication; the film may bring Hunt’s story to a conclusion; and the franchise itself may or may not continue. The available statements support the first, leave the second unresolved, and do not establish a definitive plan for the third.
What did Tom Cruise say about making more Mission: Impossible films?
At the Sydney premiere in July 2023, Cruise said, “I hope to keep making Mission: Impossible films until I’m his age,” referring to Harrison Ford, who was then 80. Entertainment Tonight reported the remark and attributed it to an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald. Read the report.

That comment records Cruise’s hope at the time. It does not show that he objected to the later title, the story, or the studio’s marketing. Describing the film as being made “against his wishes” goes further than the documented statements allow.
How did Cruise describe the film at Cannes?
At Cannes in May 2025, Cruise called the film “the culmination of three decades of work” and told the audience, “I’m very grateful for 30 years to be able to entertain you with this franchise.” Asked about whether it was a last hurrah, he did not give a definitive answer; he said, “I’d rather just people see it and enjoy.” The Associated Press reported his remarks and his response to the question. “Culmination” can describe the scale of a long-running project without settling whether Hunt will appear again. Cruise’s Cannes comments therefore do not confirm either a final Ethan Hunt appearance or a future installment.

There is no definitive franchise-ending announcement in these statements. The Final Reckoning is presented as the eighth film, and Cannes says its title and trailer invite the possibility of a final mission. Cruise’s earlier wish to continue making the movies points in a different direction, but it is not a promise about future films. Taken together, the evidence supports uncertainty—not a confirmed end to the franchise.
