Before Murder in a Small Town Season 2 aired, executive producer Jeff Wachtel previewed a more character-focused season built around Karl Alberg, Cassandra Lee, Sid Sokolowski, Isabella Harbud and Edwina Yen—alongside another season-long murder story. Which characters were set to get more attention?
- Karl Alberg: The plan called for more focus on his work as a police chief and investigator.

Wachtel also previewed another season-long murder storyline. That broad promise is distinct from the specific case introduced in the Season 2 finale preview; the two should not be treated as the same plot description.
How did Season 1 set up the preview?
The Season 2 update came after the first season’s finale revealed serial killer Tommy Cummins, played by Noah Reid. Karl saved Devon, and Tommy was arrested. That ending provides the context for Wachtel’s preview; it is Season 1 plot information, not a spoiler-free introduction to the series.

How did Season 2 end?
Season 2 ran for 10 episodes and ended with “Nightshade.” In the finale preview, Karl and the police investigated a man found dead at the bottom of a staircase. An item discovered in connection with the death might link it to other murders. Karl warned Cassandra to keep away from the case, but her own connection made that difficult. What comes after Season 2?
Murder in a Small Town was renewed for a third season in 2026, with trade coverage describing a 2026–27 season plan. A premiere date is not established in that reporting, so the renewal should not be read as confirmation of a specific release date. Deadline’s 2026 renewal coverage reported the continuation.

Is the series based on books?
