My Hero Academia: You’re Next is a high-energy companion to the manga’s ending, not an adaptation of it: the original movie is set before the heroes’ final battle and uses the idea of a “next symbol” to revisit the series’ themes of inheritance and responsibility. It is an appealing event for established fans, though its crowded cast and reliance on franchise context make it a less satisfying starting point for newcomers.
What is You’re Next about?
The official Japanese film site describes an original story set after an all-out war between heroes and villains has left society damaged. A mysterious man appears claiming to be a successor symbol like All Might, while a giant fortress becomes part of the conflict. The film’s premise puts the question of who can take up the symbolic role at its center.
Manga creator Kohei Horikoshi provided general supervision and character designs. The movie is not a retelling of the manga’s final battle or a story set after the manga’s conclusion; it occupies a place before the franchise’s concluding conflict. The official film site presents it as a new story in that timeline.
Does the movie complement the manga’s ending?
Yes, most convincingly as a thematic companion. Its challenge to All Might’s symbolic legacy connects naturally to the larger series’ questions about inheritance: what it means to carry a public ideal forward, and whether the next generation can define heroism for itself. That resonance gives the movie a useful place beside the manga’s ending without making it a missing chapter of that ending.

That distinction matters. The film’s official premise places it before the final battle, and the available official description does not present it as an epilogue or as closure for manga plot threads. Viewers looking for the adaptation of a specific ending or a post-finale update should not expect one.
Is You’re Next worth watching?
For viewers already invested in Class 1-A and the series’ world, the movie offers the intense action and familiar characters that make a theatrical My Hero Academia story attractive. The new-symbol conflict gives the spectacle a franchise-relevant idea to work with rather than making it only a sequence of fights.

The trade-off is density. A large cast and a story that assumes familiarity can leave less room for newcomers to understand why every character matters. Rotten Tomatoes’ review page reflects both sides: its praise includes animation, action, and familiar characters, while some criticism notes crowded character use and uneven elements. As David Opie’s review put it, as quoted by Rotten Tomatoes, “You’re Next is most definitely not for newcomers, but devoted fans will get a major kick out of its wit and intensity.”
That fan-versus-newcomer split is also reflected in the checked aggregator snapshot. On October 8, 2026, Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 95% Tomatometer from 19 reviews and a 91% Popcornmeter from 500+ verified ratings. These are time-sensitive site figures, not a permanent measure of the film or a substitute for an individual viewer’s taste. Metacritic reproduces Opie’s view that the movie works less well as a standalone film but delivers much of what fans expect; The Guardian’s assessment, also reproduced there, notes its somewhat unusual hybrid style compared with standard superhero storytelling. Where can you watch You’re Next?
Availability depends on territory and can change. The official on-demand page lists Japanese subscription and rental services, including Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, Disney+, and Hulu, but that Japan-specific listing does not confirm that the movie is available on those services in another country or that a subscription alone includes it. Check the listing for your location and whether rental or an add-on purchase is required. The official on-demand page is the relevant starting point for Japan.

Established viewers are the best audience; newcomers may find the cast and context demanding, and collectors have a documented reason to consider the Plus Ultra disc’s added short and booklet.
