That makes Doom the announced successor to Kang in the film’s central villain role—but “replacement” is a summary of the change, not Marvel’s quoted label for it.
Who is replacing Kang in the MCU?
Robert Downey Jr. is playing Doctor Doom, also known as Victor von Doom, in Avengers: Doomsday. The Walt Disney Company reported Marvel’s announcement from San Diego Comic-Con on July 27, 2024; D23 later identified the character by his full name, Victor von Doom. Downey joked onstage, “New mask, same task.” The Walt Disney Company’s announcement also noted that Downey had last appeared in the MCU as Tony Stark/Iron Man.
Why is Doctor Doom called Kang’s replacement?
The fifth Avengers movie had previously been publicly titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. The announced title is now Avengers: Doomsday, with Downey cast as Doom. The Associated Press described the project as having been retooled after Jonathan Majors was dropped from the franchise; that is reporting about the project’s history, not wording from Marvel’s casting announcement. The AP’s account provides that context.
So “Kang replacement” accurately summarizes the change in the announced Avengers-film villain position. It does not establish that Marvel has erased Kang from the MCU, explain every story decision behind the pivot, or mean Doom is a variant of Tony Stark. The announcement confirms Downey’s new role and the film title; broader conclusions about the story are not established by those facts.

What has Marvel confirmed about Avengers: Doomsday?
- Downey’s character: Doctor Doom, identified by D23 as Victor von Doom.
- Film title: Avengers: Doomsday, replacing the earlier public title Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.
- Directors: Anthony and Joe Russo, according to D23’s March 26, 2025 cast announcement.
- Release date listed by Disney: December 18, 2026. Disney’s film page displays that date; release schedules can change.
D23 also says Downey starred in 10 films as Tony Stark/Iron Man. His return as Doom is a distinct announced role, not a confirmation that Stark and Doom are the same character.

Marvel’s official casting announcement does not call Doom “Kang’s replacement” or detail the full reasons for shifting the Avengers film’s direction. Kevin Feige has been reported as saying Marvel had discussed Doctor Doom before the pivot; that context comes from secondary reporting, not the central official announcement. The available announcements also do not name another actor as a substitute Kang or confirm that Kang will have no further role in the MCU. The secure takeaway is narrower: Doom is the villain associated with the newly titled Avengers: Doomsday, and Downey is playing him.
