That is not proof that he does or does not have a private diagnosis. Interviews, stage presence, social style, and artistic work cannot establish one.
What is publicly known about Dylan’s diagnosis?
The available sources do not document a public autism diagnosis or a disclosure by Dylan. They also cannot establish what private medical information he may have. The distinction matters: absence of public confirmation is not evidence that someone is or is not autistic.

Dylan’s official website archives an item titled “The 1991 Song Talk Interview”. The page metadata dates its publication to January 11, 2012, while its title identifies the interview as from 1991. It is an interview record, not evidence of a diagnosis.
In a 2015 interview with AARP The Magazine, Dylan objected to being asked questions unrelated to music as if he were an expert in other fields. He said, “People have been doing that to me since the ’60s — they ask questions like they would ask a medical doctor or a psychiatrist or a professor or a politician.” He added, “Man, I’m just a musician, you know?” The remarks concern intrusive questioning generally; they do not confirm or deny an autism diagnosis.

Does a historical encounter involving autism provide evidence?
No. Alex Lubet’s 2010 article in the Fordham Urban Law Journal, “Arrested Development: Bob Dylan, Held For Questioning Under Suspicion of ‘Autism,’” analyzes a historical encounter and the social framing of disability. Its abstract says the author “does not speculate on Dylan’s autism status.” The encounter should not be treated as a diagnosis or as proof of one.
Why can’t public behavior answer the question?
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is diagnosed through professional assessment, not by matching a public figure’s mannerisms or creative work to a list of traits. The CDC’s diagnostic guidance describes criteria involving persistent differences in social communication and interaction across contexts, along with at least two types of restricted or repetitive behavior, interests, or activities. Criteria also include early developmental onset and clinically significant effects on functioning.

The assessment draws on developmental information and observation; no single tool should be the basis for diagnosis. A person’s public appearances offer only a limited view and cannot establish the developmental history, behavior across settings, or other clinical information needed to evaluate those criteria.
Why adult assessment can be difficult
The CDC notes that adults can be diagnosed, but assessment may be more challenging when information about early development is unavailable or a long history of other diagnoses complicates evaluation. That limitation makes remote speculation less reliable, not more. A clinician needs information that viewers and interviewers do not have.

What does “on the spectrum” mean?
“Autism spectrum disorder” is the current clinical umbrella. The CDC explains that diagnoses once called autism, Asperger syndrome, and PDD-NOS are now included under ASD. So questions such as “Is Bob Dylan autistic?” or “Does Bob Dylan have Asperger’s?” are best answered by considering whether there is reliable public evidence of a diagnosis—not by inferring one from his personality, privacy, or performances.
