Yes. Hulu’s Under the Bridge is based on Rebecca Godfrey’s book about the 1997 killing of fourteen-year-old Reena Virk. But the series is a dramatization, not a documentary: at least some characters and events were altered for television.
What real story is Under the Bridge based on?
The series takes its subject from the case of Reena Virk, who was fourteen in 1997. Hulu’s official description says she went to join friends at a party and never returned home. The case unfolded near Craigflower Bridge in Saanich, in the Victoria area of British Columbia, according to Time’s account of the case.

The series’ named source is Rebecca Godfrey’s 2005 book, Under the Bridge: The True Story of the Murder of Reena Virk. Hulu identifies the book as the basis for the show, and the Television Academy also describes it as the source material. Quinn Shephard adapted the book for television.
How closely does the series follow real events?
It preserves the real case as its foundation, but some storytelling choices are fictionalized or combined. Two examples reported by Time help explain the distinction:

- Cam Bentland is a composite character. The police officer, played by Lily Gladstone, represents local authorities involved in the investigation rather than one real person.
- Godfrey’s role is dramatized. The show depicts her character assisting the police investigation. In reality, Godfrey researched the case afterward, interviewing people and attending court proceedings; she did not assist police in the way shown onscreen.
These examples establish that the series takes dramatic license, but they are not a scene-by-scene audit of the show. “Based on a true story” describes its real-case foundation, not a guarantee that every scene, conversation, or character corresponds directly to the historical record.

The adaptation source is Godfrey’s Under the Bridge: The True Story of the Murder of Reena Virk. The Television Academy’s account of the adaptation identifies it as a 2005 book; Hulu’s official series page names it as the basis for the show.
Godfrey’s book is the direct choice for readers who want to compare the adaptation with its source. It is a narrative book, not a court transcript or a substitute for primary legal records.
