Netflix’s ‘Mary’ Casting Row: Was Jesus Palestinian?

Netflix’s Mary prompted debate over Israeli casting and Palestinian representation. The historical question turns on the difference between Palestine as a regional term and Palestinian as a modern national identity.

Netflix’s 2024 film Mary stars Israeli actors Noa Cohen and Ido Tako as Mary and Joseph. Its trailer prompted online criticism over the casting and calls for Palestinian representation. The historical question behind the debate has no simple yes-or-no answer: Jesus was a Jew from the first-century Galilean and Judean world. “Palestine” can describe that broader region in historical writing, but that geographic usage is not the same as calling Jesus a Palestinian in the modern national sense.

What is Netflix’s Mary?

Mary is a biblical drama about Mary, Joseph and the birth of Jesus, with Herod pursuing the family. Netflix names D.J. Caruso as director and Timothy Michael Hayes as writer; the leading cast includes Noa Cohen as Mary, Ido Tako as Joseph and Anthony Hopkins as Herod. Netflix announced the film’s release for December 6, 2024. Its catalog lists the title as Mary Mother of Jesus, though catalog availability can vary by region. Netflix Tudum’s film announcement and the Netflix catalog listing provide the film details.

Caruso described the project’s motivation this way: “Mary is the most extraordinary woman ever to walk this earth, yet her story remains largely unknown beyond a few passages in the Bible.” That is the director explaining the film’s approach, not a historical finding about Mary.

Why did the casting spark a row?

After the trailer appeared, online critics objected to Israeli actors playing figures in a biblical story rooted in the region. Some argued that the production should have included Palestinian representation. The Times of Israel reported on November 16, 2024, that the reaction was also being discussed in the context of the war in Gaza. Its report on the backlash documents this reaction; it does not establish how representative the criticism was of viewers or Palestinians generally.

The dispute is about contemporary representation and production choices. Casting decisions do not, by themselves, establish the historical identity of Mary, Joseph or Jesus.

Was Jesus Palestinian?

The answer depends on what “Palestinian” means. Jesus lived as a Jew in the first-century world of Galilee and Judea. In historical scholarship, “Palestine” is also used as a geographic name for a broader region that includes places associated with his life. In that regional sense, someone may describe Jesus as being from Palestine. But applying “Palestinian” as a modern national identity to a first-century person projects a later category backward. These meanings should not be treated as interchangeable.

The terminology also does not mean the region was governed as one unit throughout Jesus’ life. After Herod the Great’s death, Galilee and Perea were ruled by Herod Antipas, while Judea, Samaria and Idumea went to Archelaus. After Archelaus was removed, Judea became a Roman province. The New Testament geography and the administrative history are discussed in the BYU Religious Studies Center’s overview of New Testament geography and its account of Judea as a Roman province, AD 6–66.

How should the historical term “Palestine” be understood?

“Palestine” is used in academic writing as a regional term for the land and setting of first-century Jewish life. The later Roman provincial name Syria Palaestina is associated with the period after the Bar Kokhba revolt; that later administrative name should not be mistaken for the first use of every geographic form of “Palestine,” nor does it settle the meaning of modern Palestinian identity. Cambridge University Press’s chapter on the context of first-century Palestinian Judaism uses the regional framing, while the BYU discussion of New Testament geography helps situate the places associated with Jesus.

A careful formulation, then, is that Jesus was a Jewish man of the first-century Galilean and Judean world; whether “Palestinian” is appropriate depends on whether the speaker means a regional label or a modern national identity.
