Jailbreak: Love on the Run is based on the 2022 escape of Alabama corrections official Vicky White and inmate Casey White. On April 29, Vicky took Casey out of the Lauderdale County Detention Center for what she described as a mental-health evaluation, then left with him. Authorities initially did not know whether she had helped him willingly or had been coerced. Later reporting described a secret romantic relationship and said she assisted the escape. An 11-day manhunt ended in Evansville, Indiana, on May 9, with Casey captured after a vehicle chase and crash and Vicky dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Who were Vicky and Casey White?
Vicky White was a Lauderdale County corrections official in Alabama. Casey White was incarcerated for earlier crimes and was awaiting trial on a capital-murder charge in the 2015 killing of Connie Ridgeway. The U.S. Marshals Service said Vicky was scheduled to retire on the day the pair disappeared. TIME later reported that Casey was serving a 75-year sentence for earlier convictions when he escaped.

The two were not related and were not legally married, according to the accounts reviewed by TIME and the U.S. Marshals Service. The documentary focuses on their relationship and the escape, but the legal status of their relationship is distinct from the romantic connection later described in reporting.
How did Casey White escape?
On April 29, 2022, Vicky arranged to take Casey from the detention center for a supposed mental-health evaluation. According to a timeline published by ABC News using information from the Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office, she left with him in a patrol car. The jail later learned there had been no evaluation or courthouse appearance and that the pair had not returned.

The U.S. Marshals Service said authorities believed Vicky had helped Casey escape. The agency’s May 3, 2022 release described the warrant and the investigation as it stood then; it was not a final adjudication of her role. On May 1, Sheriff Rick Singleton said there were “indications” that she assisted, but authorities did not yet know whether she had acted willingly or under coercion.
Why was there uncertainty about Vicky’s role?
In the first days after the disappearance, investigators had to consider whether Vicky was an accomplice or a victim. That uncertainty is important context: early public statements reflected an active investigation, not a settled account of what had happened between the two.
Later reporting presented a clearer picture. TIME’s September 25, 2024 account, drawing on the documentary and subsequent reporting, says surveillance footage and recorded phone calls showed that Vicky and Casey had a secret romantic relationship and that Vicky helped him willingly. This later account should not be retroactively confused with what authorities knew when they first issued the alert.
How did the manhunt end?
The U.S. Marshals Service assisted the local investigation and, according to its FY 2022 annual report, activated its Rapidly Advancing Manhunt protocol. The Marshals Service’s May 3 release announced rewards of up to $10,000 for information leading to Casey’s capture and up to $5,000 for Vicky’s; those were 2022 offers, not current rewards.
TIME describes the search as an 11-day manhunt. Authorities tracked the pair to Evansville, Indiana, where a vehicle pursuit ended in a crash on May 9. Casey was captured. Vicky died after shooting herself.
What happened to Casey White after the escape?
Casey was a capital-murder suspect at the time of the escape, not a person convicted of Ridgeway’s murder in the accounts cited here. TIME reports that he confessed to the killing, later recanted, and pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. Those details describe the status of the separate Ridgeway case in TIME’s 2024 account; they do not turn the charge into a conviction.
TIME also reports that Casey later pleaded guilty to first-degree escape. In exchange, the felony-murder charge connected to Vicky’s death was dropped, and he is serving a life sentence with parole eligibility reported for 2081. That is the legal status reported by TIME in 2024.

Jailbreak: Love on the Run was released on Netflix on September 25, 2024. TIME says it includes interviews with investigators, Vicky’s coworkers, and Casey’s fellow inmates. It tells the story through the escape, the investigation and manhunt, and the relationship later described by investigators and reporters. For viewers weighing the documentary against contemporaneous reporting, the key distinction is timing: official releases from May 2022 capture what authorities alleged or knew at the time, while the documentary and TIME’s later account present a retrospective narrative.
