John Oliver Mocks HBO Max’s Return by Comparing It to the “Gulf of America” Name Change

John Oliver used the Gulf of America naming dispute as the setup for a joke about Max becoming HBO Max again—and the service’s long chain of names.

On Last Week Tonight on May 18, 2025, John Oliver mocked Warner Bros. Discovery’s decision to rename Max as HBO Max again. He connected the streaming service’s series of name changes to the Trump administration’s dispute with the Associated Press over the name “Gulf of Mexico,” using both as examples of how jarring an imposed name change can be.

What John Oliver said about the rebrand

Oliver’s segment was about President Donald Trump’s antagonism toward the press. He referred to the White House blocking Associated Press access over the outlet’s continued use of “Gulf of Mexico” rather than “Gulf of America,” then pivoted to the streaming service’s changing identity. Variety reproduced Oliver’s line: “It can take time for people to adjust to a stupid name change.”

He ran through the service’s names—HBO Go, HBO Now, HBO Max, Max, and HBO Max again—turning the sequence into the joke. Variety also reproduced his escalating punchlines: “Then, somehow it gets dumber still” for HBO Max, “and against all the odds it becomes even worse” for Max, and “before inexplicably going back to the stupid thing it was before” for HBO Max. Variety’s May 19 report covers the segment and its context.

Why Max became HBO Max again

Warner Bros. Discovery announced on May 14, 2025, that Max would return to the HBO Max name that summer. The company’s stated rationale was that putting HBO back in the service’s name would reinforce the brand and the identity subscribers associate with it. The move reversed the 2023 change from HBO Max to Max. WBD’s announcement explains its reasoning.

Variety reported that customers began seeing the HBO Max name on July 9, 2025, with the change rolling out across territories rather than switching everywhere at once. That timing is Variety’s reporting; WBD’s announcement said the return would happen in summer. Variety’s July 9 report describes the rollout.

Why the Gulf comparison works—and where it stops

The two episodes share the narrow feature Oliver was joking about: people were being asked to adopt a changed name. The analogy supplied a comic frame for the repeated streaming-brand changes, but it does not make a corporate rebrand equivalent to a government naming dispute or the White House’s treatment of a news organization. The Gulf controversy was the political setup for the bit; the HBO service’s own chronology supplied its punchline.

How WBD anticipated Oliver’s reaction

At the May 14 upfront, WBD streaming marketing chief Shauna Spenley joked about Oliver’s likely response to the rebrand: “We just cannot wait for his hot take on this whole rebrand. We think it’s going to be pretty hot.” Oliver’s segment then made the company’s anticipation part of the joke, mocking WBD for appearing to invite his reaction. Variety reported Spenley’s remarks and Oliver’s response.

What the name means for viewers

The rename was a branding change, not an announcement that the service had become a different product category. HBO’s FAQ describes HBO Max as the streaming home of HBO programming. Current plans, prices, and regional availability can vary, so viewers should check HBO’s official information for the terms where they live.
