His sudden movement from his chair and the loving speech that follows are not a real recovery or conversation with his daughters: he imagines them as he is dying, while they remain beside his body and grieve.
Does Vincent really come back to life?
No. In Netflix Tudum’s ending analysis, published September 20, 2024, Vincent’s apparent return to energy and movement is described as a vision in his dying mind. He sees himself still in his favorite chair, with Katie, Christina, and Rachel gathered around him in tears. His speech and the reconciliations that seem to happen during it are imagined, not words the sisters hear.

The film lets the audience experience the moment from within Vincent’s vision before revealing the grief unfolding around his body. It is an emotional reunion, but not a medical recovery.

At his request, they move him to his favorite chair. He appears to regain strength, moves about, reads his obituary, and speaks tenderly about his life and daughters.

The perspective shifts: Vincent sees his body still in the chair and his daughters grieving around it. The apparent recovery and reunion have taken place in his mind.

The film returns to the sisters’ goodbye and the immediate aftermath of his death. Christina sings, and Rachel recalls the “crazy little ducks” joke that Katie used to add to the lullaby.
Why does Vincent imagine the conversation?
The vision gives Vincent a chance to say what his daughters need to hear: that he loves them, and that Rachel belongs with Katie and Christina as his daughter. That makes the imagined reconciliation emotionally important even though it is not a literal exchange. The film does not establish that the sisters hear or know the words he imagines saying.

The moment also speaks to Rachel’s place in the family. She has lived with Vincent, while her sisters return to the apartment as his health fails. In its official synopsis, Netflix describes Katie, Christina, and Rachel as grown daughters who come together during their father’s final days.
What does the ending mean for the sisters?
The sisters’ shared goodbye and their laughter over the duck joke suggest a renewed closeness, not a complete resolution of every conflict. Rachel still goes outside at the end to take in the New York air. Her solitary gesture preserves her distinct way of coping even as the family shares a moment of tenderness.

That mixture of connection and distance fits the film’s portrait of grief: loss can bring people together without erasing their differences. Netflix describes the story as one of three sisters moving through conflict and the gradual return of love in a fractured family.

The extended speech and sudden transitions can feel like a break from ordinary time. Writer-director Azazel Jacobs connected that effect to his own experiences with people nearing the end of life. Speaking to Netflix, he said, “I’ve found time moving in inexplicable ways in the end-of-life experiences I’ve had with family and friends. One thing that should take minutes seems to stretch out way longer, and other moments collapse into one another.”

That comment helps explain the film’s creative approach; it is not medical evidence about what dying is like. The scene remains a fictional, subjective vision.
Who are the three daughters?
The daughters are Katie, played by Carrie Coon; Christina, played by Elizabeth Olsen; and Rachel, played by Natasha Lyonne. Rachel has been living in the apartment with Vincent, and the other two sisters reunite with them as their father’s health declines. Netflix’s His Three Daughters Media Center page identifies the characters and cast.
Netflix’s release and plot page also describes the sisters returning to their father’s home as his health fails. Netflix’s ending analysis said the film was streaming on the service when the article appeared in September 2024; availability can change and may vary by country.
