Jeanne du Barry is a historical drama about the rise of Jeanne du Barry at the court of Louis XV, played by Johnny Depp. Its strongest appeal is its visual world: costumes, sets and Versailles locations give the film considerable period atmosphere. Its weaker point is dramatic focus, with the central relationship and Jeanne’s inner life not developed as fully as the lavish presentation invites. It is worth considering for viewers drawn to courtly period films, but less persuasive if you want a tightly focused character study.
What is Jeanne du Barry about?
Directed by Maïwenn, who also plays Jeanne, the film follows a working-class woman whose intelligence and allure help her climb the social ladder. At court, she becomes Louis XV’s favourite; the story traces her rise and fall. The Festival de Cannes selected it as the opening film of its 76th festival, and it opened in French cinemas on 16 May 2023, the day of its world premiere. Cannes’ film page provides the broad premise and release detail.

This is a fact-based historical drama, not a documentary. The available material establishes the film’s central premise, but not the accuracy of specific disputed episodes, so it is best approached as a dramatic interpretation rather than a definitive account of Jeanne’s life.
What works: the film’s period world
The production’s clearest strength is its visual and period craft. Critical coverage singled out the costumes, sets and Versailles locations, which give the courtly setting scale and texture. These elements make the film appealing as a piece of period spectacle even when its narrative does not sustain the same richness.
#1 Best Overall
That contrast also defines the viewing experience: the surroundings are carefully elaborated, while the drama can feel less sure about what it wants to probe in Jeanne and the people around her. The ornate surface is a genuine pleasure, but it cannot by itself supply emotional depth or a firm through-line.
Where the drama loses force
The central weakness is not a lack of incident so much as a lack of cumulative dramatic focus. Jeanne’s ascent is compelling material, yet the film’s effort to present her as a figure worthy of sympathy does not always become a probing portrait of her motives or a consistently engaging account of her relationship with Louis XV. The result can feel more like an elegant procession through court life than a steadily deepening character drama.
Rank #2
This is a synthesis of the critical divide, not a claim that every reviewer responded the same way. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus described the film as waltzing aimlessly while attempting to vindicate its central figure. Variety critic Peter Debruge, in a review listed by Metacritic, wrote that it “risks turning a would-be scandal into a royal bore.” Those reservations sit alongside praise for the film’s visual design.
Johnny Depp as Louis XV
Depp plays Louis XV, while Maïwenn takes the title role as Jeanne. The film’s broad premise depends on the courtly relationship between them, but its weaker dramatic development limits how fully that relationship can anchor the story. Viewers drawn to Depp’s performance or to the pairing may find interest in the casting; the film’s appeal, however, rests more securely on its setting and visual craft than on a deeply developed emotional connection.

Why did critics give it mixed reviews?
The checked aggregator snapshots show a split response: visual accomplishment attracted praise, while narrative depth, focus and energy drew criticism. These are critic-rating measures, not audience scores, and their review counts can change.
| Aggregator | Snapshot checked in 2026 | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| Metacritic | 48/100 from 23 critic reviews | Metascore, classified as “Mixed or Average” |
| Rotten Tomatoes | 48% from 83 reviews | Tomatometer |
The two figures use different methodologies and should not be read as interchangeable ratings. Together, they reflect the same broad critical tension: a film with striking period presentation that did not persuade many critics that its character work and storytelling were equally strong. Metacritic’s film page and Rotten Tomatoes’ film page display the cited reception information.

Is it worth watching?
Choose Jeanne du Barry if lavish court settings, costumes and a rise-and-fall story are your main interests. Go in with more modest expectations if you want a sharply focused study of Jeanne’s psychology or a relationship drama that builds steadily in emotional force. Its mixed reception makes sense: the visual achievement is easier to appreciate than the film’s less settled dramatic purpose.
