No official Season 8 remake or Daenerys Targaryen return is confirmed in the HBO and Warner Bros. Discovery materials reviewed. The relevant announcement is about renewals for two other shows in the franchise: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and House of the Dragon. Their news may fuel speculation, but it is not an announcement that HBO is changing the ending of Game of Thrones.
Is HBO officially fixing Game of Thrones Season 8?
No. Warner Bros. Discovery’s November 20, 2025 announcement does not announce a remake, revised cut, or other repair to the original series’ eighth season. It announces renewals for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and House of the Dragon. The distinction matters: new shows set in the same franchise are not evidence that HBO plans to alter Game of Thrones.
This is what the official materials reviewed establish; it is not a guarantee that no later or unindexed announcement exists. For the announcement itself, see Warner Bros. Discovery’s November 20, 2025 press release.
What did HBO and Warner Bros. Discovery announce?
The release says A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms was renewed for a second season and House of the Dragon for a fourth. It described those seasons as due in 2027 and 2028, respectively; those dates are announced plans and could change.

Francesca Orsi, HBO’s EVP of Programming and Head of HBO Drama Series and Films, said: “We are thrilled to be able to deliver new seasons of these two series for the next three years, for the legion of fans of the Game of Thrones universe.” The statement refers to those two renewed series, not a new season of the original show.
Is Daenerys returning to Game of Thrones?
No Daenerys return is announced in the reviewed official materials. House of the Dragon is a Targaryen story, but Warner Bros. Discovery describes it as an adaptation of George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood set 200 years before Game of Thrones. That earlier setting is franchise history, not a continuation featuring Daenerys.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is another separate franchise series. Neither show’s renewal establishes that a character from the original series will return.

House of the Dragon adapts Fire & Blood and is set 200 years before Game of Thrones. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is a separate series in the same franchise; the renewal announcement gives its second season’s planned timing, but does not position either show as a replacement ending for the original series.
Read the source material
HBO describes Game of Thrones as based on George R. R. Martin’s book series. The novels offer a way to explore the source material, but they are not an official television rewrite or confirmation of a changed series ending. See HBO’s official series page.
