Friends ended after season 10 because co-creators Marta Kauffman and David Crane chose to make it the final season—not because the creators identified one actor’s departure or a ratings collapse as the cause. They had considered ending the series after seasons eight and nine, but continued when the studio and network brought it back. By season 10, they agreed the story had reached its endpoint.
Why did Friends end after season 10?
The decision was made over time, rather than arriving as a sudden cancellation. Kauffman said the creators had been discussing the end for about three years. Crane recalled that they thought the series might finish after its eighth season, then its ninth, before finally deciding that season 10 would be the end. He said the studio and network would signal that the show was over, then find more money and bring it back. In their account to Next TV/Broadcasting+Cable, the creators described the final season as their choice after those earlier possibilities.

That account does not establish that one cast member leaving, a particular salary dispute, or a single ratings result caused the ending. The creators’ explanation is repeated deliberation followed by a decision to stop.
Why did season 10 feel like the right stopping point?
Kauffman’s explanation was about the show’s subject and the characters’ stage of life. She described Friends as “a show about the time in your life when your friends are your family.” In her view, that period changes when people begin building families of their own. That was Kauffman’s thematic explanation—not a documented statement of the network’s rationale. The creators discussed the decision and the show’s premise in the same interview.

The finale also brought the central relationships to a close. Ross and Rachel reunited after their long-running on-again, off-again story, while Chandler and Monica left their familiar Central Perk routine for a job opportunity and a new home life. The Television Academy’s anniversary coverage describes those concluding arcs.
When did Friends end?
The sitcom ran for 10 seasons on NBC, from September 22, 1994, through May 6, 2004, according to the Television Academy’s program history. Its two-part finale, “The Last One,” was taped on January 16 and January 24, 2004, according to the Academy’s anniversary account.

On January 24, 2004, after the finale taping concluded, CBS/AP reported the production’s emotional atmosphere. Warner Bros. Television president Peter Roth described “an enormous sense of accomplishment” alongside the sadness. The contemporaneous report captures the moment the cast and crew finished recording the final episode; the broadcast followed on May 6.
