The March 16, 2018 trailer breakdown suggested that the Avengers would try to draw Thanos toward the Infinity Stones he wanted, while preparing for conflict on two fronts: Wakanda and Titan. Gamora’s voiceover states his goal—wiping out half the universe—but some of the trailer’s apparent sequence of events and character movements are interpretations of edited footage, not explicit explanations.

What is Thanos trying to do?

In the trailer, Gamora says: “The entire time I knew him, he only ever had one goal—to wipe out half the universe. If he gets all the Infinity Stones, he can do it with the snap of his fingers, just like that.” James Whitbrook’s March 16, 2018 Gizmodo breakdown quotes the line as an explanation of Thanos’s objective.

Whitbrook compares that premise with the comics storyline The Infinity Gauntlet, while noting that the comics’ motive involved Death. That comparison does not mean the film follows the comic plot exactly.

What strategy do Tony Stark’s words suggest?

Tony says, “We have what Thanos wants, so that’s what we’ll use.” The shots accompanying the line show Doctor Strange’s Time Stone and Vision’s Mind Stone, according to Whitbrook’s breakdown. Read alongside Tony’s “he’s coming to us” line, the scene suggests the heroes intend to use the Stones to draw Thanos into a confrontation.

The breakdown says Vision is moved to Wakanda both to protect him and to draw Thanos there, drawing partly on set reporting rather than dialogue that spells out the plan. The trailer supports the broad impression of a defensive strategy, but does not fully explain how the characters settle on it.

Why are the heroes divided between Wakanda and Titan?

The defense in Wakanda

The Wakanda footage shows Captain America meeting T’Challa, Okoye, and the Dora Milaje. Whitbrook also identifies Black Widow, War Machine, Falcon, and Bruce Banner among the heroes there. Shuri appears examining Vision’s synthezoid body, while later shots show Wakandan forces fighting Thanos’s army, identified in the breakdown as Outriders.

Together, these scenes present Wakanda as a major battle front and as the place where Vision is being protected. The trailer does not explain every step that brings each character there.

The confrontation on Titan

On what Whitbrook identifies as Titan, Iron Man faces Thanos alongside Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, and members of the Guardians, including Star-Lord and Drax. The breakdown reads the orange, ruined landscape as Titan. It also suggests that the ship seen over Earth may help explain how Earth-based heroes reach the planet; that travel link is an inference from the footage, not a clearly narrated itinerary.

What does the trailer show about the Infinity Stones?

Whitbrook reads the ship sequence as showing Thanos take the Space Stone from the Tesseract aboard the Asgardian refugee ship. The trailer appears to show him crushing the Tesseract to obtain the Stone. The breakdown identifies Proxima Midnight, Ebony Maw, Corvus Glaive, and Black Dwarf—the Black Order—around Loki in this sequence.

The order in which the ship sequence and the Wakanda and Titan confrontations occur is not settled simply by how the trailer cuts between them. Its editing gives viewers glimpses, not a definitive chronology.

What is the red object over New York?

The breakdown opens with a red object or light over New York and connects it to the ring-like ship seen in the first trailer. Black Widow, Bruce Banner, and War Machine react to it. The identification is Whitbrook’s reading of the footage; the shot itself does not name the object.

What is Thor’s new weapon called?

Whitbrook identifies Thor’s weapon as Stormbreaker, based on toys bearing that name. The detail is a merchandise clue, not proof of the weapon’s exact in-film origin or of any particular toy’s current availability. The breakdown contrasts the name with fan speculation about other weapons from the comics.

How to read the breakdown today

This is a look at what the trailer appeared to reveal before Avengers: Infinity War opened—not a report of confirmed plot details beyond the footage and dialogue described. The source is James Whitbrook’s March 16, 2018 Gizmodo article, which said the film would open in theaters on April 27, 2018; that date is historical release context, not a current release-status update. The trailer analysis leaves questions about plot outcomes and chronology unresolved.
