Morena Baccarin gives Elevation a sharp center, but this 2024 altitude-based monster thriller leans on familiar genre beats.

Morena Baccarin gives Elevation its sharpest edge: her weary scientist Nina brings a welcome center to a familiar monster-survival story. The 2024 thriller has an effective high-concept hook—survivors are safe above 8,000 feet, while danger waits below—but its recognizable character beats limit how far the premise can take it. If you are wondering whether it resembles A Quiet Place, the comparison fits the survival-thriller lineage, though this film’s defining rule is altitude, not silence.

What is Elevation about?

Directed by George Nolfi, Elevation stars Anthony Mackie as Will, Morena Baccarin as Nina and Maddie Hasson as Katie. After a creature invasion, people have found relative safety in the Rocky Mountains above 8,000 feet. Will must cross below that boundary with Nina and Katie on a mission to help save his son.

The altitude limit gives the movie a clear engine: a journey into danger is also a crossing of the boundary that separates safety from exposure. Disney+ lists the runtime as 1 hour 31 minutes, while Rotten Tomatoes lists 1 hour 30 minutes, so “about 90 minutes” is the fairest general description.

Is Elevation like A Quiet Place?

Yes, in the broad sense that both belong to the high-concept monster-survival thriller tradition: a simple rule shapes how people move through a dangerous world. But their rules are different. In A Quiet Place, silence is central to survival; in Elevation, the boundary is elevation, with people safe above 8,000 feet and vulnerable below it.

The comparison is also part of the critical conversation. TheWrap called the film a “solid ‘Quiet Place’ knockoff.” That captures its familiar genre construction, but the altitude premise gives Elevation its own basic tension. Whether the rule generates enough suspense—and whether the family stakes feel fully developed rather than functional—are the more useful questions when judging the film.

Is Morena Baccarin the best part of Elevation?

She is a strong candidate, though that is a judgment rather than a critical consensus. Nina is a scientist, and Baccarin plays her with a worn, incisive presence that helps give the story a sharper center. William Bibbiani of TheWrap wrote, “Baccarin wears world-weary well.” Brianna Zigler of The A.V. Club called her “perhaps Baccarin is the most enjoyable to watch.”

The A.V. Club also notes Nina’s importance to the film’s resolution, giving her more to do than simply accompany Will’s mission. Still, the broader reception is not exclusively about Baccarin: Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus highlights Mackie’s star turn, while praising the scenery and faulting the film for being too derivative to reach its potential.

What do reviews say about the film?

Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus describes a thriller with striking scenery and a strong Mackie performance, but says its derivative approach keeps it from fulfilling its potential. The A.V. Club criticizes familiar character beats and exposition-heavy writing, while finding Baccarin especially watchable. TheWrap is more receptive to the film as a compact B-movie, finding enough thrills in its short runtime and calling Baccarin a particularly good fit for the material.

At the Rotten Tomatoes snapshot accessed October 8, 2026, Elevation had a 54% Tomatometer from 57 reviews and an 80% Popcornmeter from 250+ verified ratings. Those figures are a dated snapshot, not a permanent measure or a stand-in for every critic or viewer; scores can change.

Is Elevation worth watching?

It is a reasonable pick if you want a brisk survival thriller built around a legible, unusual constraint, or if you enjoy watching Baccarin bring character to well-worn material. The film’s mountain setting and altitude rule offer a distinct hook, but the familiar writing may frustrate viewers looking for a more original or deeply developed genre story. TheWrap’s B-movie framing is apt: the appeal is a compact dose of creature-threat tension, not a reinvention of the form.

Where can you watch Elevation?

Disney+, Hulu and Prime Video search listings show viewing routes, but availability depends on territory and can change. Check the services in your region for the current listing. Rotten Tomatoes records a U.S. theatrical release on November 8, 2024, and a listed streaming release on November 26, 2024. A 2025 Swedish film-industry newsletter indicates DVD and Blu-ray editions, but that does not establish current retailer inventory or availability in other countries.
