Fallout quickly became one of Prime Video’s biggest hits. But the published numbers do not prove it drew an audience the same size as The Last of Us: the figures measure different things, in different places and over different time periods.
How many people watched Fallout?
Amazon reported that Fallout reached 65 million viewers globally in its first 16 days. That is a company-reported audience count, not a Nielsen estimate of U.S. viewers. TheWrap reported the figure in May 2024: TheWrap’s coverage of the Nielsen figures and Amazon’s audience announcement.
Separately, Nielsen counted 2.9 billion viewing minutes for Fallout in the United States during its first five days, as reported by TheWrap and included in Nielsen’s 2024 streaming recap. Minutes measure time spent watching, not the number of unique people. The two figures describe different audiences, territories, metrics and windows, so they should not be combined or treated as alternate estimates of the same total.
Was Fallout Prime Video’s biggest hit?
Amazon MGM Studios said on April 18, 2024, that “Fallout ranks among Prime Video’s top three most-watched titles ever.” The company made that claim in its Season 2 renewal announcement. It establishes the show’s standing as a major Prime Video success, but it is Amazon’s platform ranking—not a Nielsen ranking or an independently published comparison of every title.

How does Fallout compare with The Last of Us?
HBO reported that the The Last of Us season-one finale drew 8.2 million viewers on premiere night across HBO Max and linear telecasts. HBO also reported a 30.4 million average audience across the first six episodes and said the first episode was approaching 40 million U.S. viewers. Those figures were published on March 13, 2023, in HBO’s finale audience announcement.

The figures establish that both series were major hits, but they do not provide a like-for-like audience comparison. A U.S. total of streaming minutes cannot be converted into unique viewers without additional data, and neither that figure nor Amazon’s global 16-day count matches HBO’s premiere-night or season-average measures.

What the comparison does—and does not—show
Calling Fallout a hit on the level of The Last of Us is defensible as a broad comparison of hit stature: Amazon placed Fallout among Prime Video’s top three most-watched titles ever, while HBO reported very large audiences for The Last of Us. It is not established as a claim that the two shows had equivalent audience sizes. The available published figures use different metrics, time windows, geographies and distribution models.
