The official trailer and studio synopsis set up a sequel that moves beyond the events at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza: more than a year later, Abby’s attempt to reconnect with the animatronics brings the old horror back into the story. Matthew Lillard is listed in the cast as William Afton, but that credit alone does not reveal how or how much Afton appears.
What the trailer and official synopsis establish
NBCUniversal’s official synopsis places the story more than a year after the supernatural events at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. The town has turned those events into a campy local legend and is preparing its first Fazfest. Mike and Vanessa have kept the truth from Mike’s 11-year-old sister, Abby, about her animatronic friends.
When Abby sneaks out to reconnect with Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy, the story begins to uncover secrets about Freddy’s origins and a horror hidden for decades. That is the studio’s stated setup, not confirmation of every detail suggested by the trailer’s more dramatic marketing language. NBCUniversal’s page embeds a video labeled Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 | Official Trailer 2; TheWrap separately reported the first trailer on July 24, 2025. Those are distinct trailer references.
Are the killer animatronics loose in the world?
“Killer animatronics loose in the world” is a useful description of the sequel’s expanded threat, but it should not be read as a precise plot summary. The synopsis says the story reveals a long-hidden horror after Abby reconnects with the animatronics. It does not specify which characters leave the restaurant, where they go, or what they do there. The phrase signals a broader-feeling danger than a single location; the available official description does not establish the trailer’s implied plot mechanics.

What is confirmed about William Afton’s return?
NBCUniversal’s cast list names Matthew Lillard as William Afton. This confirms that Afton is in the film’s cast, but a cast listing does not establish whether he appears in person, in flashbacks, or in another form, nor how much screen time he has. The studio synopsis promises secrets about Freddy’s origins and a decades-old horror, but it does not spell out Afton’s role in those revelations.
Returning characters, new cast, and filmmakers
Josh Hutcherson is listed as Mike, Elizabeth Lail as Vanessa, and Piper Rubio as Abby. The official page also lists Theodus Crane as Jeremiah. Freddy Carter, Wayne Knight, Mckenna Grace, and Skeet Ulrich are among the new cast named by NBCUniversal. Emma Tammi returned to direct, and Scott Cawthon wrote the screenplay.

How the sequel relates to the game
The film belongs to the Five Nights at Freddy’s franchise, but the available sources do not establish it as a direct adaptation of the second game. Apple’s UK App Store page describes a mobile version of the game as a remastered version of the PC game, with night-security gameplay. That is an adjacent franchise product, not evidence that the movie follows the game’s plot. The listing describes a mobile edition and should not be taken as confirmation of a physical edition or availability in other territories.
