Read the main Fifty Shades story in this order: Fifty Shades of Grey, Fifty Shades Darker, then Fifty Shades Freed. The three films follow the same order. After the original novels, you can optionally read the Christian Grey viewpoint retellings: Grey, Darker, and Freed.

Fifty Shades books in order

Penguin Random House catalogs the original novels as books 1–3 of the series, followed by three Christian Grey perspective retellings. For a first read, finish the original trilogy before deciding whether you want the companion books.

  1. Fifty Shades of Grey — the first novel in the main story.
  2. Fifty Shades Darker — the second novel.
  3. Fifty Shades Freed — the third and final novel in the trilogy.

The publisher’s series catalog lists the companion novels next:

  1. Grey — the first story retold from Christian Grey’s perspective.
  2. Darker — the second story retold from Christian’s perspective.
  3. Freed — the third Christian-perspective retelling.

Are Grey, Darker, and Freed sequels?

They are retellings of the corresponding original novels, not a continuation of the story after Fifty Shades Freed. They revisit events through Christian’s point of view, so readers encounter substantial overlap in plot. The publisher describes Grey and Darker as Christian-perspective retellings and lists all three as books 4–6 in its series catalog.

Which order should you read the books in?

Approach Reading order Best for
Core story Fifty Shades of Grey → Fifty Shades Darker → Fifty Shades Freed Readers who want the complete main trilogy without revisiting events.
All six novels Original trilogy, then Grey → Darker → Freed Readers who want Christian’s viewpoint and are comfortable with repeated plot.

Reading the three originals first is a practical recommendation, not a requirement: it follows the publisher’s numbering and lets you experience the main story before its companion retellings.

Fifty Shades movies in order

The film trilogy follows the same title sequence as the original novels. Universal lists the films in this order in its three-film collection:

  1. Fifty Shades of Grey
  2. Fifty Shades Darker
  3. Fifty Shades Freed

The third film adapts the trilogy’s final volume. Penguin Random House says it opened worldwide on February 9, 2018, in its announcement about the film.

Where can you watch or own the films?

Universal currently lists the collection for digital purchase and physical ownership in 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD. Availability can vary by retailer and region. Universal also notes that a digital purchase gives a limited license to access the content, subject to the retailer’s terms; check those terms and your device’s format compatibility before buying.
