The missing character is Thufir Hawat, the Atreides Mentat played by Stephen McKinley Henderson in Dune (2021). Director Denis Villeneuve said he cut Hawat because he chose to make the films a Bene Gesserit-focused adaptation, leaving less room for the Mentats. In Frank Herbert’s novel, Hawat survives the attack on House Atreides and is forced to serve the Harkonnens; Dune: Part Two does not tell that part of his story.
Why did Villeneuve cut Thufir Hawat?
Villeneuve gave a specific reason in an interview with Entertainment Weekly on March 2, 2024: he had decided from the start to emphasize the Bene Gesserit, so Mentats would have a smaller presence than they do in the book.
“One of the most painful choices for me on this one was Thufir Hawat. He’s a character I absolutely love, but I decided right at the beginning that I was making a Bene Gesserit adaptation. That meant that Mentats are not as present as they should be, but it’s the nature of the adaptation.”
— Denis Villeneuve, speaking to Entertainment Weekly

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That is Villeneuve’s stated explanation for Hawat’s absence. Although a film necessarily has to choose which characters and storylines to include, he did not identify runtime as the reason for this particular cut.
Who is Thufir Hawat?
Hawat is House Atreides’ Mentat: a human trained in advanced calculation and strategic analysis. The first film introduces him as one of Duke Leto’s trusted advisers. Mentats serve as human alternatives to computers in the world of Dune; Hawat’s expertise makes him valuable to the Atreides and, in the novel, to their enemies as well.

What happens to Hawat in the book?
Herbert’s novel continues Hawat’s story after the Harkonnen attack on House Atreides. He survives, is captured, and is compelled to serve as the Baron’s Mentat. His coerced position creates a conflict of loyalty: he is made to aid the enemy responsible for destroying the house he served.
Dune: Part Two omits this arc and leaves Hawat’s fate unstated on screen. Viewers may conclude that he died during the attack, but the film does not show or confirm that outcome. The novel gives him a different fate and follows the consequences of his capture.

How this fits Villeneuve’s wider adaptation
Villeneuve has also described a broader goal for the films: to make Paul’s rise read as a warning about charismatic leaders, rather than simply a heroic ascent. In a December 2024 interview with CNN, he discussed giving Chani a stronger perspective that creates distance from Paul’s transformation. He has likewise spoken about expanding the agendas and dramatic arcs of Chani and Jessica.
Those choices help explain the films’ priorities, but they are separate from the reason Villeneuve gave for cutting Hawat. His direct explanation was the adaptation’s emphasis on the Bene Gesserit and the resulting reduction in Mentat presence.

Film and novel: Hawat’s story at a glance
| Point of comparison | Dune: Part Two | Herbert’s novel |
|---|---|---|
| Hawat’s fate after the attack | Not stated on screen; the film does not continue his story. | He survives and is captured by the Harkonnens. |
| What happens next | His capture and service to the enemy are omitted. | He is forced to serve as the Baron’s Mentat, creating a story of coerced service and divided loyalty. |
| Adaptation emphasis | Villeneuve said he focused on the Bene Gesserit, leaving Mentats less present. | Hawat’s role and post-attack storyline receive space in the novel. |
Readers who want Hawat’s omitted storyline should look to Frank Herbert’s Dune novel, not Dune Messiah. Villeneuve has described Dune Messiah as a corrective epilogue to the way some readers embraced Paul as a hero, but it is not the source of Hawat’s capture-and-service arc.
