That contrast—open surroundings, an increasingly trapped body—is the film’s central source of tension.
What is Don’t Move about?
The 2024 Netflix thriller follows Iris, played by Kelsey Asbille, a grieving woman who encounters a stranger in an isolated forest. He injects her with a paralytic agent, and as its effects progress, she has to run, hide, and fight to stay alive. Finn Wittrock plays the pursuer; Moray Treadwell and Daniel Francis are also in the cast. Netflix’s official Tudum feature and Media Center listing establish the setup.
How does the setting create claustrophobic terror?
The forest is isolated, but it is not a conventional locked room. Iris has physical space around her and, at first, the possibility of movement. The paralytic premise turns that apparent freedom against her: as her ability to act diminishes, the landscape offers fewer practical escapes. The tension comes from the mismatch between the size of the environment and the shrinking set of choices available to its protagonist.
That claustrophobia is less about walls closing in than about a body losing its usefulness. Running, hiding, and fighting are all survival strategies named in Netflix’s synopsis, yet each depends on mobility the drug is taking away. The open setting therefore becomes a pressure system: distance matters only if Iris can cross it, and an escape route is no help if she can no longer use it.

What does the real-time approach add?
Netflix’s October 25, 2024, Tudum feature says the film unfolds across roughly the same span of time as its characters. Co-director Brian Netto described the goal: “The challenge we said to them was, ‘We would love for it to be [in] real time,’ ” The approach fits a premise built around a physical process that cannot simply be paused. Each stretch of the story carries the pressure of time passing while Iris’s options contract.
Co-director Adam Schindler explained the sequence-by-sequence design: “Every sequence we’re like, ‘OK, how do we make it tougher on her? How do you paint yourself into a corner? And then how do you get yourself out of that?’ ” This is the film’s basic suspense engine: a new obstacle, fewer resources, and the question of whether Iris can still find a way through.

Does the premise sustain a feature?
The setup is deliberately focused. Rather than relying on a complicated mythology, Don’t Move gives its protagonist one urgent problem—survive while losing the ability to move—and builds tension from the consequences. That concentration makes the movie’s physical predicament easy to follow and gives its isolated setting a clear dramatic function.
It also places considerable weight on the central performance. Producer Sam Raimi said, “The script asked our actor to be still for so many minutes in the movie, and I was afraid,” The concern points to the unusual demand at the heart of the concept: suspense must hold even when the protagonist’s capacity for visible action is being stripped away. The film’s premise makes that restriction its defining hook, not a side detail.

Who made Don’t Move?
Brian Netto and Adam Schindler directed the film, with a screenplay by T.J. Cimfel and David White. Sam Raimi produced it. The combination of a stripped-down survival setup and the escalating predicament described by the directors is what gives the story its compact, high-pressure shape.
