His manager, Matt Luber, confirmed the death to the Associated Press; his family said he died “peacefully in his sleep.” The family’s description is not a stated medical cause of death, and the sources cited here do not establish one.
From football to acting
Weathers’s first public career was on the football field. He played linebacker for the Oakland Raiders before continuing in the Canadian Football League, then completed his studies and pursued acting. The Associated Press reported that he played one NFL season, in 1970, and spent two years in the CFL. The Raiders’ own remembrance described his time with the team as two seasons; those accounts use different measures of his Raiders tenure, while the AP distinguishes his NFL season from his later CFL years.
Weathers studied theater at San Diego State University, then finished his studies at San Francisco State University. He graduated with a B.A. in drama in 1974, according to the AP’s February 2, 2024 report. The Raiders’ remembrance also noted an acting career that spanned five decades.
Apollo Creed became his defining film role
Weathers played Apollo Creed, the heavyweight champion who begins as Rocky Balboa’s rival and becomes his ally, in the first four Rocky films. Lucasfilm described Creed’s arc as growing from rival to best friend and trainer. The role made Weathers a lasting presence in the series, but he understood it as a beginning rather than a finish. In a 2017 interview with The Daily Beast, quoted by the AP, he said: “It puts you on the map and makes your career, so to speak. But that’s a one-off, so you’ve got to follow it up with something. Fortunately those movies kept coming, and Apollo Creed became more and more in people’s consciousness and welcome in their lives, and it was just the right guy at the right time.”

Action, comedy and a later chapter in Star Wars
Weathers’s screen work moved between genres. He appeared as Al Dillon in Predator, played a golf pro in Happy Gilmore, and appeared as himself in the television comedy Arrested Development, according to the AP.
For a new generation of viewers, he played Greef Karga in The Mandalorian. Lucasfilm said he also directed two episodes: “Chapter 12: The Siege” and “Chapter 20: The Foundling.” The company said Weathers received an Emmy Award nomination for his work on the series; it was a nomination, not a win.

For Apollo Creed, the first four Rocky films trace the character’s changing relationship with Rocky across the series. Capelight’s German-market listing for a Rocky UHD Blu-ray/Blu-ray edition includes Weathers among the cast; the listing does not establish current stock, and buyers should check regional compatibility.
