Daddio turns one late-night taxi ride from JFK toward Manhattan into a two-person drama about conversation, perspective and the possibility of human connection. Christy Hall’s film has an appealingly focused premise, but its impact depends on whether the dialogue makes its characters feel more complex—or simply explains them. Critics have disagreed about how successfully it does.
What is Daddio about?
A young woman gets into a yellow cab at JFK and rides toward Manhattan with Clark, the driver, played by Sean Penn. Dakota Johnson plays the passenger. As the trip unfolds, the pair strike up an unexpected conversation that becomes the film’s main dramatic event.
Christy Hall wrote and directed the 2024 drama. Rather than build around a chain of plot twists, Daddio keeps its attention on the changing exchange between two strangers sharing a confined space. The question is whether that conversation can create enough movement to sustain a feature: do the characters become newly legible to each other, and to the audience, or does the film’s narrow frame start to feel repetitive?
Does the conversation make the ride compelling?
The premise gives Hall a clear challenge. With the journey doing much of the structural work, the dialogue has to carry shifts in tone and perspective as well as reveal character. A conversation that feels like a genuine encounter can make the cab’s limited setting intimate; one that feels too explanatory can leave the characters seeming less like people discovering each other than voices delivering ideas.

That tension is visible in the critical response. In its Toronto Film Festival review published September 10, 2023, The Guardian found the characters psychologically limited. Reviewing the film at its theatrical release on June 28, 2024, the Los Angeles Times described it as an attempt to put verbal discourse front and center and judged the result underpowered. Those are distinct critical assessments, not a consensus that settles the film’s value for every viewer.
How do Sean Penn and Dakota Johnson fit the two-hander?
Penn and Johnson carry a film built around the contrast and rapport between driver and passenger. The setup puts both actors in a sustained exchange rather than a plot-heavy thriller, so the interest lies in how the conversation changes the balance between them. The film’s central gamble is that two people talking in one place can generate enough emotional and psychological movement on its own.

- Classic Styling: Faithful reproduction of the 1957 Chevy Bel Air with authentic taxi cab livery, roof sign, and period-correct detailing.
- Detailed Interior: Realistic dashboard, seating, and trim elements reflecting 1950s style.
- Functionality: Opening doors, hood, and trunk for interactive display.
- Quality Build: Die-cast metal body with plastic parts for precision and durability.
That approach will be most rewarding for viewers who enjoy character-focused dramas and are willing to let a conversation, rather than external action, set the pace. If you want a taxi ride to become a tightly plotted suspense story, Daddio is working toward a different effect.
Is Daddio worth watching?
Daddio is an intriguing choice for viewers drawn to contained dramas, verbal sparring and the possibility of connection between strangers. Its single-ride structure gives the film a strong organizing idea, while the divided critical response points to the risk in that idea: talk can be the action, but it has to make the people speaking feel as layered as the conversation suggests.
