Spoilers for the released trailer. The Avengers: Doomsday trailer confirms a multiverse-scale crossover, brings Steve Rogers and Loki back into view, and identifies Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. It does not explain the crisis driving the story or how these characters fit together. Here are five reveals, separated into what is confirmed and what remains interpretation.
1. Robert Downey Jr. is playing Doctor Doom—not a confirmed version of Tony Stark
What is confirmed
Disney identifies Robert Downey Jr. as Victor von Doom, also known as Doctor Doom, in a new Marvel Cinematic Universe role. Disney’s October 5, 2026 guide describes Doom as Latveria’s monarch, a master of sorcery and technology, and a longtime Fantastic Four adversary. Disney+’s official guide explicitly says there is no confirmed connection between Tony Stark and Doctor Doom.

What it may mean
Downey Jr.’s return makes comparisons with Iron Man almost inevitable, but casting the same actor does not establish that Doom is Tony Stark, a variant of him, or connected to him by origin. Those are theories, not trailer revelations. Doom’s established combination of political power, technology, and sorcery offers a distinct basis for a major antagonist.
2. The crossover brings together more than the Avengers
What is confirmed
Disney’s official premise says heroes from three distinct universes collide and face an existential threat. Disney’s cast and guide materials identify characters associated with the Avengers, Fantastic Four, X-Men, and Wakanda among the returning groups. The Disney UK trailer announcement also names directors Anthony and Joe Russo and producers Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, and Jonathan Schwartz.

The scale of the ensemble points to a collision across established Marvel worlds rather than a reunion limited to one Avengers lineup. The official wording does not identify the three universes by name or explain the rules governing their collision. It also does not mean every character belongs to the same team: the named groups have separate histories and identities.
3. Loki appears, but his role is still a mystery
What is visible
GamesRadar+’s July 20, 2026 trailer breakdown identifies Loki in the footage and notes a TVA pass and a Yggdrasil detail.
What it may mean
Those details invite a connection to Loki’s multiverse story, but they do not establish what he is doing in the film or how he reached this point. The trailer breakdown’s questions about his circumstances are speculation, not confirmed plot information.

4. Steve Rogers returns with Mjolnir
What is visible
GamesRadar identifies Chris Evans as Steve Rogers and reports that the trailer shows him wielding Mjolnir. That is a notable image, but the available official material does not explain the circumstances behind his return.

Steve’s appearance raises immediate questions about his place in the story and the sequence of events that brought him back. The footage establishes his presence and the hammer; it does not disclose his role, the duration of his return, or how the film will handle his history.

What is confirmed
The official synopsis says the heroes face an existential threat “unlike anything they’ve ever encountered.” Disney+’s guide attributes the premise to the film, while the trailer supplies ominous language and images without laying out the full cause or resolution. TechRadar’s July 20, 2026 breakdown discusses visual interpretation, but that interpretation should not be mistaken for an official plot explanation.

What it may mean
Doom’s presence alongside a world-threatening crisis makes him central to the trailer’s tension, but the footage does not confirm whether he caused the crisis, is trying to stop it, or has some other motive. Nor does it establish that a particular character dies. The central uncertainty is not whether the heroes face danger, but what the danger is and how Doom relates to it.
What the trailer has not confirmed
- Doom’s motives, or whether he caused the multiverse crisis.
- Any identity or origin connection between Doom and Tony Stark.
- The cause and mechanics of the collision among three universes.
- The roles Loki and Steve Rogers will play in the story.
- Whether a specific character dies.
Release dates and what to watch next
Disney lists December 18, 2026, for the United States on its official US movie page. Disney UK materials list December 16, 2026, for the UK; those dates are territory-specific, not necessarily conflicting. Disney’s guide says the film will eventually be available on Disney+, but gives no streaming date.
For background rather than a prediction of the film’s plot, Disney’s guide points readers to its Marvel collection and official podcast. Doom’s longstanding Fantastic Four history is also useful context, but comic-book material should not be treated as confirmation of how this film will adapt the character.
