That is the official baseline, not a complete account of every intervening event or a recap of 28 Weeks Later. Sony presents 28 Years Later as a new story in the world of 28 Days Later. Its official film page places the new story almost three decades after the virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory. Here is what that premise says about the world by then—and where interpretation should stop.
1. The story jumps to almost three decades after the virus escaped
The official timeline is nearly 30 years after the rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory. This is a long-term aftermath story, not a return to the first days of the outbreak. The time jump establishes how long the emergency has lasted; it does not, by itself, explain what happened in each intervening year.

2. Quarantine is still being enforced
Sony says quarantine remains “ruthlessly enforced.” The wording confirms that isolation is still part of the setting, but it does not specify the full boundaries of the quarantined area or identify the authority responsible for enforcing it. Claims about a particular government, policy, or territorial map would go beyond the premise.
3. Survivors have learned to live among the infected
The synopsis says some people have found ways to exist amid the infected. That suggests adaptation and persistence despite the danger. It does not establish that survivors have formed one unified society or that every community follows the same rules.

4. At least one survivor community lives on an island
The story includes a small island settlement. That gives the film a specific example of people living apart from the mainland’s dangers, not proof that all survivors—or the whole country—are confined to islands.
5. A single defended causeway controls the settlement’s connection to the mainland
Sony describes the island as linked to the mainland by one heavily defended causeway. A single crossing makes movement between the settlement and the mainland a strategic chokepoint. The synopsis does not say who built the defenses or who controls them.

6. One survivor chooses to leave relative safety
According to the premise, a member of the island group leaves on a mission into the mainland’s “dark heart.” That decision sets the story in motion. The synopsis does not give the mission’s precise objective, so assigning the character a specific goal based on a trailer image would be speculation.
7. The infected have changed
Sony explicitly says the infected have mutated. The premise establishes change over time, but not a biological mechanism or an explanation for each apparent difference in the trailer. A visible variation may invite interpretation; it should not be presented as a confirmed cause or rule without a source that establishes it.

The mainland reveals horrors that, in Sony’s wording, have mutated not only the infected but other survivors as well. The point is that the human world has changed alongside the infected. The description does not identify a particular faction, leader, or cause, so those details remain unconfirmed by the synopsis.
How to separate trailer clues from confirmed story details
Sony’s official 28 Years Later trailer, published December 10, 2024, is the source for what its shots and sounds actually show. The studio synopsis confirms the broad premise: the long time jump, continuing quarantine, island settlement, causeway, mainland mission, and changes to infected people and survivors. Those are different kinds of evidence. When interpreting a particular image, distinguish what is directly visible or audible from an explanation of why it happened; the explanation may be a theory rather than a confirmed plot fact.
