Stanley Kubrick’s thirteen feature films range from a rough independent debut to expansive works of science fiction, war, horror and dark comedy. This ranking weighs artistic achievement, thematic depth, formal invention, influence, emotional impact and accessibility; the order is a reasoned judgment, not a settled consensus. If you are new to Kubrick, start with The Shining—the British Film Institute’s suggested entry point—then use the list to find the kind of film you want next.

The count includes Fear and Desire (1953). The BFI identifies it as Kubrick’s first feature and treats his twelve films from 1955 to 1999 separately; Criterion describes its collection as containing thirteen features, though its displayed list names the twelve films from Killer’s Kiss through Eyes Wide Shut. BFI career overview · Criterion collection

13. Fear and Desire (1953)

Kubrick’s first feature is an intriguing starting point for tracing his career, but the least accomplished film in this ranking. Its independent production—funded by friends and relatives—shows a filmmaker working on a small scale before the control and precision associated with his later work. Kubrick later rejected it as amateurish, according to the BFI. That judgment is worth keeping in mind, but the film’s place here is about the finished work, not a claim that its limitations define what followed.

12. Killer’s Kiss (1955)

This compact early feature sits between the debut and the more assured crime-film construction of The Killing. It matters most as a glimpse of Kubrick developing his visual approach and interest in violence, but it offers less thematic and emotional reach than the films above it.

11. Spartacus (1960)

Spartacus is the most straightforward large-scale spectacle on this list: an accessible historical epic rather than one of Kubrick’s most formally radical works. Its position also reflects an unusual production context. The BFI describes it as the film in which Kubrick had less creative control and made more compromises than usual. That makes it a useful contrast with his later work, but not evidence that production freedom alone determines artistic quality.

10. Lolita (1962)

Kubrick’s adaptation of Vladimir Nabokov’s novel takes on a subject that is deliberately uncomfortable: an adult’s sexual obsession with a young girl. Its uneasy, often darkly comic treatment makes it a difficult watch, and its place below the later films reflects how much more fully Kubrick would develop his control of tone and form. Its subject should not be mistaken for a romantic one.

9. Eyes Wide Shut (1999)

Kubrick’s final feature is a slow, disquieting examination of desire, marriage and the private fantasies people build around one another. Its dreamlike pace and unresolved atmosphere reward patience, but can leave viewers at a distance. That deliberate ambiguity makes it a compelling late work rather than an easy first encounter with the director.

8. Full Metal Jacket (1987)

This anti-war film is built around a stark contrast between military training and the experience of war. Its divided structure gives it a different shape from Paths of Glory: rather than concentrating on command decisions and institutional injustice, it examines the processes that shape soldiers and the violence that follows. It is a powerful, unsparing film, though its two-part design makes it feel less unified than Kubrick’s most tightly constructed work.

7. The Killing (1956)

Brisk and tightly engineered, The Killing is one of Kubrick’s most accessible films. Its crime-story construction makes the shifting sequence of events part of the pleasure, while its cool attention to planning and consequence anticipates the director’s later fascination with systems that people believe they can control. The BFI also singles it out as a relatively approachable choice for new viewers.

6. Barry Lyndon (1975)

Barry Lyndon turns the rise and decline of an ambitious outsider into a measured study of status, fortune and self-deception. Its deliberate pace and controlled images create a distinct, contemplative experience, but they can test viewers who want a more immediate story. The BFI explicitly cautions that the pace may challenge audiences. This is among Kubrick’s most formally distinctive films, even if its emotional chill keeps it below the top tier for this ranking.

5. Paths of Glory (1957)

One of Kubrick’s clearest anti-war statements, Paths of Glory focuses on the moral cost of military authority and the treatment of soldiers by those above them. Its compact, forceful storytelling makes the institutional cruelty at its center difficult to evade. It is more direct and emotionally immediate than Full Metal Jacket, while still showing Kubrick’s interest in systems that turn people into instruments.

4. A Clockwork Orange (1971)

Formally accomplished and intentionally troubling, A Clockwork Orange forces the viewer to confront violence, punishment and the meaning of free will. Its style is seductive even as its subject is bleak, a tension that is central to its power and discomfort. The BFI describes it as both formally accomplished and deliberately disturbing. Its extremity makes it a poor default recommendation for a first Kubrick, but a major work for viewers ready to engage with its provocation.

3. Dr. Strangelove, or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)

Kubrick turns Cold War catastrophe into comedy without making the danger feel small. The film’s satirical force comes from treating destructive systems and the people operating them as both absurd and frightening. It is more immediately approachable than 2001: A Space Odyssey or Barry Lyndon, yet its subject—humanity’s capacity to bring about its own end—connects it to Kubrick’s larger preoccupations.

2. The Shining (1980)

The Shining is Kubrick’s most effective entry point: a horror film with a clear genre framework and an atmosphere that grows stranger the longer it holds your attention. Its family relationships and violence give the setting an emotional core, while its controlled style turns suspense into something unsettling and hard to shake. The BFI recommends it as a place to begin with Kubrick, and for viewers who want a gripping first film, it is the strongest starting choice here.

1. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)

2001 ranks first for the scale of its ambition and the precision with which it makes that ambition cinematic. It reaches across evolution, artificial intelligence, human potential, life, death and rebirth without reducing those questions to a single explanation. Its pace and open-ended form ask more of the viewer than a conventional science-fiction story, but that openness is part of its achievement: the film invites interpretation rather than closing down its mysteries. The BFI calls it a major, ambitious work. It is also the clearest example of Kubrick making a film whose formal invention and themes feel inseparable.

Which Kubrick film should you watch first?

For a first viewing, follow the BFI’s practical suggestion and begin with The Shining. If you want comedy, try Dr. Strangelove; if you prefer a brisk crime film, choose The Killing; and if a large-scale historical story sounds more appealing, Spartacus offers an accessible spectacle. Save Barry Lyndon, Eyes Wide Shut and A Clockwork Orange until you have a sense of Kubrick’s style—the first for its deliberate pace, the second for its dreamlike ambiguity, and the third for its disturbing violence. This is viewing guidance, not a rule: the right starting point depends on what you want from a film. The BFI’s guide offers a similar path and reports Martin Scorsese’s comparison of watching Kubrick to “gazing up at a mountain top. You look up and wonder: ‘How could anyone have climbed that high?’” Read the BFI’s guide.

How Kubrick’s career changed

The films do not tell a simple story of steadily increasing quality or control. Fear and Desire was independently funded; Spartacus involved more compromise than was usual for Kubrick; and from A Clockwork Orange onward, the BFI says, he worked exclusively with Warner Bros. His subjects and collaborators were international, so describing him only as an American filmmaker misses part of his career. Across the work, recurring concerns include male violence, war, sexual and familial relationships, free will, human-machine relations and the end of the world. These themes connect films that otherwise differ sharply in genre, pace and accessibility.
