Alien: Romulus changes who makes it out of its story, but its ending does not prove that the franchise has ended a 45-year character-survival trend. Rain escapes with the damaged synthetic Andy, while the human-xenomorph hybrid is cast into the rings of Jackson’s Star. The broader “survival trend” is a critical reading of the series, not a verified franchise-wide tally.
What happens to the survivors at the end of Alien: Romulus?
Spoilers for the ending of Alien: Romulus.
Rain survives and gets away with Andy, the synthetic who has helped her through the ordeal. He is damaged, so their escape is not a clean return to safety. Rain ejects the human-xenomorph hybrid into the asteroid rings of Jackson’s Star. Those are the immediate fates shown in the ending; speculation about what might happen to the pair afterward is not part of the film’s confirmed ending. Nerdist’s ending explanation compares the pair’s survival to Ripley and Jones in the original Alien.

Does that mean the film breaks a 45-year survival pattern?
Not conclusively. A review in The Atlantic characterizes the franchise as one in which humans tend to come out on top, and describes the “sole survivor” as someone who must learn to think like the alien. That is an interpretation of a recurring story shape, not a published count of who survives in every franchise installment. The Atlantic’s review does not establish a numerical trend that Romulus can be said to end.
The 45-year framing refers to the span from the original Alien in 1979 to Romulus in 2024, not a measured run of films with the same survivor outcome. The Associated Press placed the new film around the period of Alien and Aliens, and reported director Fede Álvarez’s aim of bringing the series back toward horror. The AP’s April 2024 interview calls the original’s release its 45th anniversary year.

- This truly terrifying sci-fi horror-thriller takes the legendary ?Alien? franchise back to its iconic roots. While scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station, a group of young colonizers come face-to-face with the deadliest life form in the universe. Warning: Some flashing-lights scenes in this film may affect photosensitive viewers.
What does the ending establish—and what does it leave open?
- Established in the film: Rain escapes, Andy is with her but damaged, and Rain ejects the hybrid into the rings of Jackson’s Star.
- Not established by the ending: that the hybrid’s fate definitively changes the franchise’s long-term survivor pattern, or that the series will follow Rain and Andy in a particular way.
- Not established by director comments: that Álvarez intended to end a 45-year trend. In an August 2024 interview, he said, “There should be things in the last 20 minutes of the movie that you never see coming,” speaking about surprises and cast reactions rather than a franchise-wide survival rule. Den of Geek’s interview provides that context.
Why the “trend” claim needs qualification
Alien: Romulus is a 2024 franchise entry that follows young space colonists encountering xenomorphs while scavenging a derelict station, according to the Directors Guild of America’s profile of the film. Its ending gives viewers a clear answer about this group’s immediate survivors. A claim about a 45-year pattern across the series is different: the available critical description is qualitative, and the cited sources do not supply a complete survivor-by-survivor record or Álvarez’s confirmation that he set out to overturn one.
So the careful answer is that Romulus offers a fresh survivor configuration, not proof that the Alien franchise has permanently closed a long-running character-survival chapter.
