There is no single answer to “Who played Darth Vader?” David Prowse performed inside the original trilogy’s armor, while James Earl Jones supplied Vader’s voice. Other actors portrayed him unmasked, performed stunts, or took on the role in later films, television, games, and other appearances. The 14-name list below uses a broad, mixed-media count; Guinness World Records gives a separate tally of 10 actors for Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader across theatrical films.
Why Darth Vader has more than one performer
Vader’s screen identity was built from distinct performances. For the original trilogy, David Prowse supplied the imposing physical presence in the costume, and James Earl Jones recorded the voice separately. At the end of Return of the Jedi, Sebastian Shaw appeared as the unmasked Anakin Skywalker. Later productions added other performers, with different people handling costumed scenes, stunts, voices, or animation.
Lucasfilm’s account of the reveal in The Empire Strikes Back makes the division especially clear: Prowse, inside the costume, was given placeholder dialogue and was not told the revelation; Jones kept the secret while recording Vader’s lines separately. Lucasfilm’s production account describes how the two performances came together.
The 14 performers and the roles attributed to them
This is the broad list used by ComicBook.com, not a definitive official census of every Vader performance in every Star Wars production. Its entries span films, television, animation, games, special-edition scenes, stunt work, and other appearances. The descriptions below preserve that source’s attributions where official sources do not provide the same level of detail. The original list’s ordering is retained; it is not a ranking of skill or screen time.

The figures count different things. ComicBook.com’s 14-name list includes a broad range of media and performance types, such as games, animation, stunt work, and television. Guinness World Records states that 10 actors have played Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader across theatrical films. The Guinness figure is a film-focused tally, not a correction to the broader list; neither number should be presented as a universal count covering every possible performance without qualification.
