You do not need to watch a dozen films before Deadpool & Wolverine. The most useful short route is Deadpool, Deadpool 2, and Logan: the first two establish Wade Wilson and his world, while Logan supplies the most relevant Wolverine context. The other nine films below are optional franchise background, not required homework. Director Shawn Levy told the Associated Press, “This movie is built for entertainment, with no obligation to come prepared with prior research.”
The three films to prioritize
- Deadpool (2016)
Start with Wade Wilson’s origin, the irreverent tone, and the supporting characters who form his circle. It is the most direct setup for understanding the central character.

Continue with Wade’s evolving relationships and the time-travel thread. The film also gives more context for recurring supporting characters, including Peter. TheWrap identifies both Deadpool films as the clearest preparation for the new story: TheWrap’s guide to what to watch.
- Logan (2017)
This is the most pertinent Wolverine film on the list. Its ending, Wolverine’s sacrifice, and the introduction of X-23 give the later film meaningful character context. If you watch only one X-Men-related movie, make it Logan.

Optional Marvel and X-Men movies, ranked by usefulness
These picks broaden the context around the leads, the Fox-era X-Men films, or the franchise’s timeline. They are an editorial watch order, not a studio-issued checklist.
- X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009)
An optional curiosity for the earlier on-screen pairing of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman: Reynolds played a version of Deadpool in this film. It is not necessary to understand the later films’ versions of either lead. TIME’s explanation of the TVA and related context discusses the film’s earlier Deadpool portrayal.

- X-Men (2000)
Watch this for the original mutant ensemble and a foundation for Wolverine’s place among the X-Men. It adds franchise familiarity rather than essential setup.
- X2: X-Men United (2003)
The next chapter in the original trilogy, useful if you want more of its characters and mutant conflicts before moving on to later X-Men films.

Deadpool & Wolverine [Blu-ray] (2024)- Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman reprise their roles as Deadpool and Wolverine in this superhero action adventure sequel directed by Shawn Levy.
- X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)
Completes that trilogy. It belongs on a broad franchise refresher, but is not required for the central Deadpool-and-Wolverine story.
- The Wolverine (2013)
A solo Wolverine story that sits alongside the original X-Men films and makes a useful thematic companion to Logan. It is extra character background, not a prerequisite.

This prequel-era entry expands the wider X-Men history. It is most useful if you want background on the franchise beyond Wolverine and Deadpool.

An additional look at the prequel-era team and continuity. Its value here is reference-catching, not direct preparation.
- Daredevil (2003)
The least essential pick. It is a Fox-era Marvel extra for viewers pursuing a broader studio-era cameo marathon; it is not a Deadpool or Wolverine story, and no specific connection makes it necessary. TV Guide discusses it among optional related films: TV Guide’s X-Men and related-film guide.
What about the TVA and Loki?
The Time Variance Authority (TVA) is part of the context around Deadpool & Wolverine, and Loki is the series that introduced it. But Loki is a television series, not a thirteenth movie, and the director’s no-homework framing means you do not need to add it to a required watch list. If you already know the TVA from the series, that familiarity may help with references.
Choose your watch path
- Short route: Deadpool, Deadpool 2, Logan.
- Wolverine-focused route: Add The Wolverine after Logan.
- Fox X-Men refresher: Add X-Men, X2: X-Men United, The Last Stand, and Days of Future Past; include the prequel-era films if you want broader continuity context.
- Completionist route: Add X-Men Origins: Wolverine for the earlier Reynolds portrayal and Daredevil only as a loosely related Fox-era extra.
