Spoilers for the original series finale and the sequel. The original Wizards of Waverly Place ended with Alex as the family wizard and Justin as WizTech’s headmaster. Wizards Beyond Waverly Place picks up with Justin living a mortal family life—and Alex bringing him a new apprentice. Disney’s official summaries establish those major changes, but do not give a complete account of every intervening year or specify exactly how much time has passed.
Where the original series left the Russo siblings
1. Alex won the family wizard competition
The original series resolved its central sibling rivalry by naming Alex the family wizard. She won the competition and gained full wizard powers, securing her place as the sibling who would keep her magic.
2. Justin became WizTech’s headmaster
Alex’s victory did not leave Justin without magic. Professor Crumbs retired as headmaster of WizTech and passed the position to Justin, who ended the series as a full wizard with a significant leadership role.
3. Max remained the non-wizard sibling
Max did not win the competition, so the finale left him as the sibling without wizard powers. Their father, Jerry, planned to pass the Waverly Sub Station to Max one day. The sequel premise does not say whether that plan happened. These finale details are reported in the season-four episode summary.

What changed by the time of Wizards Beyond Waverly Place
4. Justin chose a mortal home life
Disney describes adult Justin as having chosen a normal, mortal life with his family. That is a marked shift from his position at the original finale as a full wizard and WizTech headmaster. Disney’s premise does not state when he made that choice or explain all the circumstances behind it.
5. Justin’s household grew
Justin now lives with his wife, Giada, and their sons, Roman and Milo. Disney’s sequel announcement identifies the characters and their performers, placing Justin’s adult family—not just the original Russo siblings—at the center of the new setup. Disney’s series announcement

6. Alex brought Billie to Justin
Alex returns with Billie, a young wizard who needs help. Their arrival draws Justin back toward magic and prompts him to dust off his magical skills. The official premise frames Alex as the catalyst; it does not provide a full account of what she was doing in the years before she showed up.
7. Justin became a mentor to a new wizard-in-training
Billie’s apprenticeship shifts the story’s focus from the Russo siblings’ competition to Justin training the next generation. Winter, Billie’s friend, is also part of the sequel’s regular cast. Disney introduced the sequel’s title and first-look characters on May 14, 2024. Disney’s announcement

What the gap does—and does not—tell us
8. The sequel later opened a new family mystery
This development belongs to the sequel’s later story, not to the unexplained gap between the two shows. In a 2026 announcement, Disney described a four-part final chapter in which Billie tries to rescue Alex after losing her at the end of Season 2 and must reunite with her long-lost father. Disney’s final-chapter announcement
The original finale aired January 6, 2012, but the available Disney sequel announcements do not specify the precise in-universe time jump. They also do not settle Alex’s full intervening history or Max’s adult circumstances. Those details should be treated as open, rather than filled in with fan timeline calculations.
