Its newly revealed story follows the friends’ first case, sparked by a lost Great Dane puppy who may have witnessed a supernatural murder.
What is Scooby-Doo: Origins about?
Netflix describes the series as a modern reimagining of the mystery-solving group’s beginnings. During their final summer at camp, old friends Shaggy Rogers and Daphne Blake become caught up in a haunting mystery involving a lonely, lost Great Dane puppy. The puppy may have witnessed a supernatural murder, but Netflix’s synopsis leaves that connection uncertain.
They join forces with Velma Dinkley, described as a pragmatic, scientific townie, and Fred Jones, the strange but handsome new kid. Together, the four try to solve a case that draws them into a creepy nightmare and threatens to expose their secrets. Netflix calls it the case that first brings the group together. - Mckenna Grace plays Daphne Blake.
- Tanner Hagen plays Shaggy Rogers.
- Abby Ryder Fortson plays Velma Dinkley.
- Maxwell Jenkins plays Fred Jones.
The wider cast includes Paul Walter Hauser, André Benjamin, Cathy Moriarty, Rusty Schwimmer, Peter Macon, Maxwell Simkins, Jona Xiao, Dani Deetté, Elysée Sanvillé, Alex Isles, Avery Kristen Pohl, Pamela Mitchell, Ross Kimball, Sara Gilbert, Wynn Everett, Sauriyan Sapkota, and Bruce McGill. Netflix has not disclosed every character assignment, so those actors’ roles should not be assumed.

Will a real dog play Scooby?
Yes. Netflix says Scooby will be portrayed by a real Great Dane, which it describes as a first for the franchise. The puppy is central to the origin story’s mystery, but Netflix has not identified the dog or said how the production will handle the character’s performance beyond confirming the use of a real Great Dane. Netflix’s September 13, 2026 guide says production has wrapped in Atlanta and the series is expected to premiere in 2027. It does not give a month or exact release date. Netflix Media Center says the series will launch globally only on Netflix.

The company first announced the eight-episode live-action series on March 26, 2025, before revealing its current title and expanded synopsis. Its original announcement described a mystery that brings the young characters together. Netflix’s 2025 announcement also placed the new show within a franchise it said had spanned more than 50 years, with more than a dozen animated series, three theatrical films, and nearly 40 animated home-entertainment movies.
